Surfwise getting popular

I watched it on HDNet last week. That dude banged his share of chicks before picking his wife. I would love to live that surfing life, not so much the chick part and there is still time!

The movie was interesting and of course that lifestyle would be difficult today. While it sounds like it would be fun to have that lifestyle as a kid there was so much anger in many of his kids it is kind of sad. Really sick to imagine your parents humping away while you are in the same 24 foot camper with them.....jeeeeeez....no thanks!

I haven't seen it yet, but it's already in the mail. After watching the trailer I think highly of this man and what he did for his kids. The lines they said were simple truths that have been thrown by the wayside today.

People who choose to let their lives revolve around the ocean are purely unique. They tend to let the material BS (that currently has almost everyone in a sleeperhold) fade away and create there own way of living. Minimal and subliminal. It looks like this guy had the stones to not only do that to the fullest, but consequently pass that philosophy down to his children. Which is quite a gift to say the least.

Nice to see a reference to Jack in there too, I haven't picked up one of his books for awhile...

 

i just saw the movie. its amazing and it really made me think about the way that America lives their lives. I would recommend it for everyone out there. It is available in the instant quene on Netflix.

 

Watch the movie and hear the grown children before making your assessment on whether this was an ideal way to raise a family in twentieth century western civilization.

Exactly! The dude is a selfish arsehole if you ask me. If you want to live a vagrant nomadic uncivilized lifestyle by yourself that's fine. But dragging a whole family of NINE kids into it is just pure selfishness. Having sex with your wife in front of your teenaged children is sick. No matter how much he tries to justify it by spreading the "stoke" or promoting a pure surfing lifestyle... in reality it's just a selfish guy draging NINE kids around trying to work as little as possible and surf as much as possible. It was obvious in the documentary that several of his children are still emotionally distrurbed from their childhood. One or two kids living in an RV with their parents... ok maybe... but F-ing NINE kids??? WTF dude, wear a condom!

 

two thumbs up. good movie, came across it channel surfing one day. Docs outlook on life is out there but makes some sense, I thought he was selfish, personally draging his family into that gypsy lifestyle.

 

Great film

I saw surfwise a little while back. Fantastic film, not just about surfing, but about life. Doc Paskowitz's answer to "How Shall I Life?" is inspiring and selfish at the same time. I'd strongly suggest watching the film, and listening to the director commentary on the DVD too if you get the chance for a little more insight into some of the best scenes in the film.

 

many of Docs chlidren had a lot of trouble fitting into society after they moved out of the camper.

I dont think there is a right and wrong in what they did, it is just hard to integrate with the rest of society when your lifestyle is so radically different from the rest.

 

I respectfully disagree. I think it is wrong to not give your children the same opportunity that you had. Doc's son who wanted to go to become a physician but was unable to due to his lack of schooling was poignant, perhaps partly because I'm a med student. If my dad was a physician (or a graduate-level trained meteorologist and surf forecaster for that matter) and didn't give me that opportunity I would be pissed.

That being said, Doc is a guy that thinks about ethics a lot as you can tell from the film. (As an aside, I love when he's talking about one of his friends whom he calls "a good father and husband, and therefore a good man" - that quote has stuck with me as I think there's truth in it). If he had to do it all over again, I bet he would live much of his life the same but give his children a better conventional education so they could have the opportunities that he did.

Btw, Doc's son that goes fishing on his longboard way out in the ocean was awesome!! Must be scary as hell. I think I'd be too scared of sharks to do that.

 

you are making a judgement call of what is right and wrong about raising children. Doc thought he was making the right decision about how to best father his children.

Right and wrong are only personal perspectives and everyone is entitled to their own. My perspective is that how he raised his children made it challenging for them to fit into "normal" society.
