Than you are normally used to? I can get down to 30L and have a good time. But that is not on a board that is narrow as hell. There's a Coil in the shape, length, and tail I love and for pretty damn cheap. If 30 is pushing it for my limits of light foam, will 28 be too little? I'm guessing it will, but should I scoop it and just save it for no-paddle wave type-session? Not as easy to find Coils out west. But when you do, they're pretty sic custom shapes someone had made for them.
They do volume in cu.ft., what's the volume on the board you're looking at? My first board was 1.4cu.ft., my new one is 1.22cu.ft., floats me great even though i'm heavier than i'd like to be right now and with a wetsuite on and everything i'm catching waves no problem.
Depends on what type of wave you'll be using it for? Daily driver? Might not be enough. Hollow fast waves...maybe. What board is it?
It depends on the shape more than Coil vs something else. You would want a little less volume in a shortboard vs, your grovel board/fish. Assuming your talking same shape, then if 30 is pushing it, 28 will be too little, Coil or otherwise.
General volume is 30-32L, went to Coil to build me a 6'1 HPSB and I asked for enough volume to float me in a 5mil. Surfing junky chest - fast, hollow OH beach breaks. Board is the blur model (one step down from qualifier which most seem to order as a step up nowadays) and is 1.02 cubic feet, which is about 28L. I was worried but It paddles really well as they kept a good amount of foam in the center and have the distribution and foil dialed, ontop of the EPS having a bit more buoyancy to begin with. I'd give it a shot, I'm happy to have dropped the volume and my surfing has improved dramatically since moving to a more performance board. Worst case you sell and get your money back.
