Has anyone tried the Lost Bean Bag? I'm looking at getting one as my dedicated groveler for the summer. In a debate between the black dart and poly versions, a hundred dollar difference. Whatchu guys think?

ALSO, since I already know theres gonna be so some hate on LOST boards give me some other recommendations that would compete. Open to hearing advice on grovelers as this will be my first. I'm looking for a board I can ride in ankle slappers up to waist.

Already have a 7' funboard and a 6'4" shorty. No I don't want a longboard, pops has one.

I think paying $800 for a lost surfboard is insane!

Go to Wynn or mencel or dcal. Tell them you want the same board but for 500

I contacted the guy from DCAL but never got a response back. I'd like to get some feedback from some people who have had grovelers made from them. You are right $800 is ridiculous but if that is going to give me more enjoyment and increase my surfing I'm willing to go that route. I have enough cash to blow.

Has anyone had experience with grovelers from these guys?

wynn was really responsive for me. That's big reason I went with him.

I'm sure you already get the gist... shorter/wider/thicker/flatter... and they come in all shapes and sizes. Other than that, I'd recommend you go slightly higher in volume, go with EPS/Epoxy, and go with a quad. Since you're really looking for a board that will go in the smallest possible surf that's ridable, I'd recommend a deep single concave.

Outside of that, and getting away from your standard "groveler" shortboard, I'd say consider an alt shape... Mini Simmons, Sweet Potato, Retro Fish, etc.

Spending $800 for a grovelor is not necessary, and wont work any better than the $500-$550 one from your local shaper who has experience making this kind of shape.

I'm generally a fan of ...lost shapes and have owned/experience with three of their boards.

Round nose fish tri - great board for small waves. Such an amazing all around shape for small waves. Wish I still had one.

Shark quad - this board just didn't have enough volume/width for gutless waves. Rode more like a shortboard.

Lost bottom feeder. I thought I would love this board but hated it. I still don't know what the deal was...In small waves I like trimming out and riding off my front foot, the bottom feeder felt slow unless you were pumping it off your rear foot.

This is very true. Thanks for your input. That extra $200-300 could be a plane ticket to meet my pal in Cali.

I just want to find a shaper that can make a board that will excel in the way I want. Ultra groveler in 1'-3' waves. I'd like to sit out far out on a small board and catch waves with ease. Probably going with Epoxy for the extra buoyancy.

I've owned the bottom feeder and couch potato. To add volume, I got both of them one size larger than recommended (Guild Factor vol calc) for my weight...unfortunately, this added vol did not help paddling and just made the boards corky and low performance.

imo, lighter is better than increased vol in small waves. Big poly grovellers can lean on the heavy side, which makes paddling just as difficult as standard shortboards. Lighter grovellers are superior for paddling.

idk, the funboard you already have might do just as well in >3' as most of the groveler designs out there. If you're absolutely sure you're gonna be surfing a ton and in great paddling shape, a groveler will perform better than a funboard...but the difficult part is getting just the right size (too long=corky, too small=sinks).

My current groveller is a Roberts Mutant (my review). This time, I strictly followed his vol calculator and got exactly the right size. I got it in Hydroflex tech (epoxy glass over poly blank) which is a little lighter than full poly const, but not as light a EPS. The equivalent Lost model might be close to the Round Nose Fish...although I do prefer quads in small waves.

haha. kind buds/KBs... did you grow up back east? Havent heard that in a minute!!
LMK if you ever need any assistance. My chick works at the doctors office & we get everything 50% off

I know you're not a fan, but in all seriousness, the boards are good quality. Just too much foam for me. I think once summer comes it'll be a perfect replacement for a longboard/funshape on the tiniest of days.

Wynn was responsive, he got back to me real quick. As of right now I am probably leaning on going through him.
What volume do you guys think I should be looking at?

Right now my daily driver is around 32-33ish a 6'4"x20x2.5 epoxy. It doesn't get me in 1'-2' waves like I want it to.

Because I want this to slide through real small waves, I was thinking of between 37-39cl. Keep in mind I'm getting something epoxy.

    Ready GO!

I wouldn't go any higher than the lower end of that range. 5cl is a lot of volume.

That lost bean bag shape is exactly what you want for 1-2 or mushy 3 footers. Definitely EPS/epoxy would be a good option for tiny waves - like others have said - the waves don't have much mush to begin with so any extra swing weight is just working against you. I guess if I was riding a daily driver with those dimensions, I might lose 8-10 inches of length and add 2 inches of width for a small wave machine. It sounds extreme, but 5'6" x 22" in a shape like that ...lost bean bag will blow your mind in knee - thigh high waves. It is also their stock dimensions for a 5'6". Ive been riding a board just like that shape for the past 3 years.

True, yeah thanks for the advice. I'm really glad I posted because I was on the verge of going with something a lot bigger. You guys all helped out a lot. Probably looking at something between 5'6" - 5'8" with 37ish cl. Been talking to Wynn and I think he's gonna hook me up.

Mitchell, I saw that board you made in a post, the groveler. Looks like a beauty. I'd take one of those in a heartbeat.
