So, me bein a loser and not wanting to surf alone, has made me invite my friend who I started surfing with when we were learning. Thing is, he never seems to want to go. So i'll invite another friend. And another. No one ever shows or says they'll show. So i end up going alone, which is all good. but a tad lonely. sometimes thats pretty suite but not what i always want. Seems like everyone hates me. Anyone else deal with this?
I surf alone constantly. If a friend shows up awesome, if not even more awesome. I surf like Johnny tsunami, drink like wardo, and slam chicks like shred when no ones around
Don't think too much of it. People tend to get busy in life... Usually when friends ask me to paddle out - I'm busy with something - and vise versa The only time that is usually always open is early am before work and before everyone wakes up
If your really bummed out about it, maybe you should start surfing the same spot all the time (like Belmar, for instance) THEN you'll get to know the guys in the line up- and you'll get to know the regulars and locals. Over the coarse of a year or so - you'll become friends, that way when ever you paddle out - you'll know someone. Reminds me of the older days at Bradley beach, (before it became popular for some reason) you always knew everyone out there
Yes, Bradley was great in the day. Not a soul in site. Just a few surfers. Now, it's one of the most crowded breaks. It's crazy.
Dude most of the time I drive an extra 10 mile to surf solo. Just watch out for the Recovering Reverend in the White Van!
You blame all your pals. Yet, the only consistent feature of all your dissatisfying relationships is you. Maybe you talk too much in the ocean? Maybe you jibber jabber chatterjee replay every wave when you paddle back out to your friends? Maybe you're that guy who always borrows wax? Maybe you don't floss, mister steeenking breath? Modern America: blame everyone else. Accountability, eh, not part part of sparky's game plan.
I like surfing alone. I got the reef alone for 20 minutes this morning. It's nice. If it gets over 8' I dont mind some friends.
I'm turning 50 this year, and most of the guys I used to surf with have more or less dropped out of the game. Sad really, cause I'm still like a kid on christmas morning when it comes to surfing, but they've largely given up the sport except under the best of conditions. So now I rarely even call anyone, I just go, which is fine, I still have a ball, but I do miss the banter on a good day. I usually run into a surfing acquaintance on a given session, a couple nods, brief pleasantries, but no I can rib when they back off a drop...
Nope. wrong. Yankee is not me. But that is a heck of an insult, so very good!! I still get called early AM to go out by many friends. Just today I had to decline an invitation to hit the water because I am running a slight fever. (Maybe I have Zika??!!?? My head isn't shrinking yet though...). Tomorrow will be another day......
Exactly! This is what I do, all my friends always say they want to learn & have me teach them but they never show. I remember once I brought double gear for one of my friends & she totally bailed and said she had to study...well an hour later she was at a Redsox game. So anyways I always go alone & just became friends with the locals over time because they'd always see me in the line up or at the shop. Lots of friendly faces every time I surf now Only bummer is that I don't see them as much in the winter as I would like - miss them!!
