So, I'm a pretty avid fan of the WSL. Love the surfing, Mick's my guy, respect the Brazzos all-or-nothing paddles, the new crop of young guns is great & the entire WSL tour has improved exponentially in format & execution & technology (dig the reports from Strider and Pete Mel in the water) since, oh, maybe the NY competition. The problem for the viewer is.....there's no sound of the sport. It's all announcers, announcers, announcers. Don't get me wrong, the talking heads are really good, really professional. But wtf, is there ANY other sport where you never hear anything from the area of competition? No! And the result is, surfing becomes boring to the viewer. Tennis: racket hitting ball, players making noise, grunting/screaming/bellowing of competitors, crowd noise, umpire rulings & barking enforcements. Baseball: bat on ball, crowd noise, umpires bellowing, directional mics picking up player & umpire convos. Football: crowd noise, players smashing one another, players screaming at one another, sounds of efforts & struggle. Basketball: player chatter on court, cursing (NBA), crowd noise, coaches screaming invectives at players. Soccer: crowd noise, sometimes player chatter on field, player huddles frenzy noise. Lacrosse: crowd noise, players hitting one another, sideline player/coach chatter. Hockey: puck on stick noise, crowds going crazy, coaches barking at referees & at players, players chirping at one another on the ice. Boxing & MMA: man, you are feeling like you are in the ring with those fighters. Surfing: silence. Except for announcers. Surfing, what it should be: the competitors as they pull out all the stops to get into waves; the wipeouts, the waves deafening crashing & deadly; jet skis revving hard on their missions to extract the competitors in hazardous conditions; competitors barking at one another while waiting on sets; fans / crowd noise; the guys on the boats as they position for recoveries & other stuff; the waves(!) crashing & smashing, the brute force of the ocean; the sprint to priority by the competitors; the ipod headphone music the surfer is listening to as they get jazzed for their heat. There's so much, so easily, that should be done to make the sport so much more watchable. And now the complaints about Turpel & others from the trolls. Butt seriously, our sport is weirdly, oddly, bizarrely.....silent....to the viewer.
Uhm I've been saying for awhile the announcers never stfu. You could hear the waves crashing if they ever stopped talking until they are lightheaded. Trolls I'm sure that's directed at me. You are the biggest troll by definition on here.
Can't post anything intelligent, so you take a swipe at me eh beezlebubs. And, whoa, what's with your really weird fixation complex that you believe every Internet post is about....you? You negate anything you post through your own impotence, sistah. Back to the tread.
I can't honestly tell you the last time i watched a full event. Its too boring and I love surfing. I would like to hear what the guys in the water are saying, uncut and unedited, i would love to hear the crowd and feel all the hype. The sound is why supercross and motocross are doing so well. There is always something cool as sh!t to hear.
Good point. And those moto dudes are wearing helmets, no less, but can still be heard barking, vry cool. Even NASCAR brings the viewer into the action via car cams, pit cams/mics & massive crowd noise over screaming engines.
Bubs don't be d*ck just to be a d*ck, that's what makes this place go meh(spot on by the way) It's definitely improved and right on with the timing. Sound would be awesome. Good use for it on replays: sound of wave like you said, buckets getting thrown. Maybe mic up a board or surfer, all that's probably coming. But also, to keep it terrifying and limit the number of people who actually want to surf, they should add reunion island and seal Beach to the tour. Throw a cam on someone's femur!!!
Great critical insight, and the noise like a good NAASCAR race is a bodily high. Big screen, IMAX Chasing Giants, there was noise. But on a smaller scale, the dudes that are Ziff techs should be able to figure it out. Nothing like duck diving a big wave and when you pop up you can't see, but you hear a roar out back, and you know you are focked.
What if Pete or strider sit in the line up with the competitors, live real time heat interviews. Strider: Kelly you need a 1.1 and there is 1 minute left. What's the game plan? Kelly: fvck off.
lol that would be awesome Would have loved to hear Kelly & Andy going at it out there in between sets, damn
You hear the sound of the waves at some events. Mostly Pipe and Teaupoo. Putting a mic on the surfers would end up mostly white noise and gurgle gurgles. The only reason other sports sound better is there is easier access for multiple people to hold directional mics. Better sound costs more $$$. In a sport where they can't even fill commercial time for half the events, you gotta take what you can get.
No high fives (only for Rob the Mob) fo you! Just pure hate, and respect, and more hate! Nothing like it now. Too many Brazzos to pick one to hate one in particular. Too many up and coming wave surfing geniuses to anoint a white knight. But it's cool to see the progression and camaraderie amongst the gifted.
I'm thinking the way things have been judged lately , i think they need to break down each judge score to see how they scored them . Each turn , trick . Maybe its just me but seeing the same back side snap , (Wilkinson) Even with the injury Filipe had , he seem to surf a better heat .
All your points are to be exactly expected from someone that lives 3-4 hours from the beach, and claims to be a surfer. Everything you say is exactly that which leads to ruining surfing. Are you truly that moronic?? You can't be!! It just isn't possible; but you have achieved it. Only you. Go back to buying furniture for co-workers, it is what I would expect from an interior decorator....hahahaha!!
soon there'd be a simod007 out there with em, throwing infractions round. 3 mother mentions and you're out of the line up. all the aussies: "aw... " mic up the seagulls hwile youre at it too. the quacky b52's...
If you have ever watched Endless Summer you will notice that Bruce Brown used the sound of a crashing wave when he was trying to emphasize the heaviness of Waimia Bay and Pipe. It worked for me.
I enjoy the commercialization of surfing as much as the next guy. With that being said, you can't really compare surfing to any other professional sports because our "field" may not be ready for weeks. Many sports can be played rain or shine, indoors or temporarily postponed. They are also conveniently scheduled east coast and west coast viewing. There are a handful of events that I don't follow at all because they happen early morning into the workday.
And, once again, the asshat unamusing Depends-attired troll attempts to hijack a tread to make it all about him.
Barry you don't even surf bruhhhhh Well unless you count surfing the interwebs...then youz the #1 Rippah Barry Fumunda Cudda Swell Infos #1 Moron Oh and truck the police Barry
This is a great point Yankee, and sound design is something taken seriously in many of the other major sports - either by getting mics close to the action or by using canned sound effects. I'd love to see the WSL figure something out. If you're interested, this is worth listening to on a long ride to the beach or work or wherever... http://99percentinvisible.org/episode/the-sound-of-sports/
