I will be surfing this weekend in atlantic city nj. The water temperature is around 50, and the air should be in the mid 60s and it will be sunny. I have a 4/3 with good 5mil gloves and booties. Do you guys think I will need to wear a hood? or should I be fine without one.

I'm not a New Jersian but I wouldn't be putting a hood on if the air is 60 degrees

No wind no hood. I'm not a hood fan, though...

F'ing hate the hood dude. When I was out in Santa Cruz a while back I had all my gear with me and was going to wear the hood like everybody else (most people), but didn't at the last second, went back and handed it to my wife and paddled out. I had my 3/2, boots, gloves, and a thermal rashguard underneath and 2 mil shorts. Water was about 50, air was in the 40's - 50 at DP if I recall. It warmed up some when the sun came out though so it wasn't all that bad. Lastly a few hours before I was feeling cold

You southern boys don't realise the air still has a chill to it up here...less to do with air temps, more to do with North winds and current water temps, and continuous exposure which is no bueno over the long term.

A bigger day and 50 degrees, you will need it because you will probably be duck diving quite a bit.

Yep, it's all about the duck dive. 50 degrees is fine, but after 5 duck dives, your head will be ready to explode. If it's bigger, I'd go out with the hood, but only use it when you get caught inside.

No I realize lol, just going based on my limited cold experiences. I'd wear the hood if it was necessary, but like I said if I can endure without it I will. You're right though, the wind is really what makes a big difference, low wind no problem, windy = hood

Based on some people at the spots I surf, you need a hood, boots, and gloves when the water is 65 and the air is about the same.

I decided not to wear a hood yesterday in North Ocean County and the water was 46

Oh it was just grand till I caught a right and had to duck a few in a row to get away from the rocks

I'd say you'll cook in the hood if your doing a lot of bobbin' but if your getting ducky your gonna need it if you know what I be sayin'

Maybe those NE winds will warm it up a couple notches but I wouldn't bet on it

Hey be careful dawg if the thugs and drugs don't get you that "heavy surf" might

I wish it would hurry up and get over 70 up here in Jax. It's been hovering in that awkward 68-70 range, where it's not quiiiite warm enough to comfortably trunk it (at least given the relatively low air temps and wind), but I hate wearing a wetsuit if I don't have to, and my s/s full is rashing the crap out of me.

I also remember back in like Sept, water temps still in the 76-80 range, and two guys paddling out in full suits. Like WTF.

I actually acquired and used a hood a few times this winter when the air temps were low and the wind was rippin' down here. Didn't care much for it but I really hate being cold.

Yeah, there have been days where it's felt like the water is 80+ down here, big difference up in Jax, it's practically Georgia ya know.
