ok ok i know id still be out there on short period wind slop days due to my addiction, and i agree with pj on how every wave is a gift. I just find myself in a fortunate (or unfortunate in some ways) period in my life where i am not tethered to any one break or coastline, and for someone to say how "long period groundswell sucks" is to completely leave out the best and most powerful form of surfing for coastlines around the world. You think the WCT guys are predominantly surfing 8 second wind slop? not on the reg. Would you even watch if they would?

I mean obviously no one here is trying to be pro but to completely marginalize "long period ground swell" as sucky is the words of someone who has clearly never traveled extensively to any break too far beyond their home on a coastline that favors single digit swell. Or their comfort level for that matter. Perhaps a better thread title would be "eff long period groundswell, for eastcoast stuck floridian chophoppers"

I think it was pretty obvious he was talking about his home break and the east coast. Could not agree with you more on your point relative to breaks that actually set up for long period swells abroad. I certainly would prefer a long period point break or a reef that can handle versus long period on an east coast sandbar!

I'm with you. I'm not sure of his travel history but I think he's referring more to his home break, which I have no experience with personally. But i'd like to point out that there are plenty of breaks in FL that handle long period swell just fine, in fact some spots are better with that kinda of juice, it's all about the swell angle at that point. I hear people complain about close outs with anything over 10 seconds, but if you know where to go it's not an issue most times. If it is, it's typically because it's a straight E swell for an E facing break.

this is the truth. i remember a day this winter in new england with a decent 15 second swell period. I rolled up to a beach break and everyone on the beach was complaining how this one particular spot was closing out. Little did they know a few miles to the north and south there were reefs and points going off. It pays to look around.

It sure does, it's good to have 3-4 go-to spots on days like that and depending on the swell direction you can narrow it down to a couple options and hit a tactical strike.

i mean come on, wishing for short period wind slop over groundswell is like wishing for a sandy handjob from an old lady over sex with a std free pornstar.

I've traveled a lot... and surfed a lot of big waves... long waves... short waves... junk waves... all over the country and a few places around the world. And just like everybody, I've got my favorites. But I'd be lying if I didn't say the longest waves I've ever surfed were in NEW JERSEY. With the right swell and the right conditions, there are places that can reel for 300 yards. These days are few and far between, but when you surf your home state year round for 40+ years you're bound to catch it a few times.

I'm not saying they're the longest waves on Earth... I'm just saying the longest waves I personally ever surfed have been right here in the Jerz.

I never wished to wind slop over ground swell. Just saying ground swell is over hyped and overrrated 99% of the time on the east coast. Every barney that owns a Ron Jon comes out, the tide never plays nice, it closes out, etc. Of course ground swell has the potential to be 10xbetter than any wind swell and it usually is but that's where the hype comes from.

Very true. Steep north will make that wave as good as it gets! Otherwise, a little west pinch and it's three different waves.

I rode a wave in south jersey during hurricane bill that was atleast a minute long. Just rolling all the way to the inside sand bar, then it got wild!
