I know a treads has been done on on this topic before but with new options out there, I was wondering what you degenerates think on surf watches? I am torn between a Gshock or a ripcurl rifles watch. Gshocks are time tested and durable and I really liked the last one had but the damn band broke while surfing this winter and now it's at the bottom of 1st street...

Has anybody had any experience with the ripcurl watches? If so, what do/did you think of them? They are the best deal for a higher quality surf watch and it doesn't have a massive face that could get broken easily. So they advertise anyway... Just wondering what yalls opinions are on watches and if you have any other options I'm open to ideas.

*edit* I've gone through numerous Nixon watches and I am not looking to buy one. Too expensive and they don't hold up to what I usually put them through surfing/life wise.

Dude get a cheap Neff watch or something... 20 bucks tops. I've lost two g-shocks in my day. Not worth the stacks in my opinion. But those two g-shocks I had were gravy. Had tides on it and one was solar-powered.

Have one, it's lasted a year and a half and I wear it every day...just a basic watch

It's done way better than their dawn patrol wetsuite

Only a pain when I gotta strap it over my 7mm excel gloves and under a 5mm

Find a G-Shock you like. You can get one for about $50
Some have tides etc. But they are generalized tide information--it will not give you exact tide for the very spot you are standing at; regional, so to speak.

Funny thing. The battery on my G Shock finally pooped out, so I went surfing most of last month without a watch. I was concerned, because I felt dependent on it, often squeezing in quick (less than 1 hour) sessions during lunch, after work, or other times when time is limited.
But in some ways it was a relief. I got used to going without and was able to judge within 5-10 minutes how long I'd been out. (Same with going surfing without eyeglasses - one adapts)
But I eventually replaced the battery and was happy to have my watch back. End of story

I have a shark watch with a cloth band. Its called a 'shark clip'. 2 years of daily use and it still works great. I will say that it did loosen when i wore it in the ocean so I put a few stitches in the band to permenately size it to my wrist. Overall its a very solid, minimalist watch for around $50

Was the same...and as I always go either am or later pm I could more or less judge with putting my hand to the horizon and use the sun (with knowing sunrise and set time)...however little more difficult when it's cloudy so the misses had enough of being 10-30 min late so I got a watch for xmas...no more "just one more" all the time now, but once in a while is a minor offense ;)

I have a Ripcurl Oceantech ATS. It might be 11 years old. Have had great service from Ripcurl for battery repacement. Last year it stopped running and Ripcurl fixed it no charge.

Thanks for advice guys. I actually have to have one for my new job coming up (new thread on that coming shortly) so I need to just shop around and find me a good deal. That's good to know that ripcurl is great with customer service.

I used to wear watches until my last watch was neatly plucked off my wrist on a reef in Nica. I was gonna buy a new one, but since I always have my iPhone with me, it seemed pointless, so I've been watchless ever since.

I'm not really into time, unless I gotta be somewhere.

The only time I wear a watch is when I'm in the water. I need it for one thing, to tell the time of day. I don't need it for tides or moon phase or whatever. I've got a phone for all that. So I've got a simple Casio. Analog movement with white hands and numerals on a black face makes it easy to read at a glance. Works great and it's cheap so I'm not worried if anything happens to it.

    Shark Tide Watch.

Simple, accurate, comfy (not too big) and reasonably priced.

They make watches. That's what they do and they do it well.
