Well boys I'm finally pulling the trigger on getting out of VB. I'm gonna be moving down to Kill Devil Hills next week and going to try and make it down there. Going to be working ocean rescue in Nags Head and have a second gig at night lined up. I mean, I'm always down there when it's good so I figured why not just go for it. First time I'll be on my own and I not going to lie that it's a little scary leaving a permanent job with good benefits and stuff but I just need to get out of VB. Stoked that's I'll be at the beach everyday and in a place with much better surf. I'm probably going to retire the 757surfer account but I'll be on here when I can. This ain't a goodbye tread. It's just a starting over tread. I guess the logical name change would be 252surfer?
You will have to RE-introduce yourself, of course. And do not forget the pics of your girlfriend....naked, of course.
Thanks DP! If I save enough money this summer and after my lease is up i might be coming down to Florida for a bit this winter to stay with KIllaKiel. I'm kind of scheming this grand idea of taking a month before trying to find full time job and traveling up and down the east coast to surf. But that's only a scheme for now.
Sounds like you are pretty young....I know scores of folks who have done exactly what you are trying to do. I have not lived down there for many years. I think it could be a great experience for you. I decide I did not want to get stuck there and moved on. Many people have decided to "get stuck there on purpose" and for some it has been great and for others it's a big struggle. If you are seriously considering staying year round, I would look for a job that will carry you year round (opinion...I know folks in food and beverage that don't work for three months and travel during the winter...PR, Costa etc). If this is just a short term, not sure what I want to do with my life....soul searching expedition then summertime work is great and you will surf plenty (assuming it's not flat!). I don't want to diminish your stoke but living down there year round is a bit challenging. It can also be very rewarding. I spend a ton of time down there and have all of my life. I hope it works out for you. BTW, I would keep the 757...don't try to be someone you are not...be proud son!
Thanks for the good wishes JayD. I know it may be tough but I know i can make it work if I have to. I've always told myself I can do anything I can put my mind to and so far it's panned out well. I'm going to feel it out this summer and fall and see what I can do. I have a really nice setup for the summer with my friend so I can save some money for winter if I can't full time work by then. But I do have my eyes on where to look for the jobs. I know the area pretty well considering my parents used to own a place/live there around Avalon pier so that helps out a lot. Plus, I'm literally down there at least a few times a month to surf so I've made friends and have spoke with them on a best plan of attack to try and make it down there. It may not be easy but I really do love it down there. The whole vibe, the waves, the people, the beauty and scariness of it sometimes. It truly is one of my favorite places in the world. And gong around saying I'm from va beach doesn't go over so well down there all the time haha.
Go for it dude. I packed up after college and drove all the way across the country to Seattle with barely a dime. If my dumb arrrrrse can pull that off you'll have no problem. Sounds like from your other posts you know what you're getting into and have a plan. Just don't get stuck unprepared when 12 washes out. But I'm sure you know that already! Good luck man!
I was just saying don't forget your roots (VB). I am not from VB and your are correct that there may be a bit of a stigma down there. Honestly, most of the people that live down there are from VA....I know two families that have been there for 3-4 generations. Very few that are more than 1-2 generations and those are folks like you or I that loved it. I have owned property down there as did my parents and have family that stayed. It is truly a special vibe down there...I did a lot of "growing" up there. You sound like you have proper drive to make it happen...it's easy to get lost there. You will love it.
I don't think Hwy 12 washes out in KDH. Usually only on Hatteras island either north of Rodanthe, between Avon and Buxton or east of Hatteras. 757, good luck in your endeavour. Seems like you've got a good plan. I'm jealous. I've always wanted to live on the banks but the wife is concerned aboot hurricanes so we live in south Florida instead
Generally speaking this is true Val. There is an area near KDH...just north in Kitty Hawk where 12 washed out twice this past year....completely. You can see brand new asphalt in the area it blew through. BTW, I'm not sure which place would be more prone for a Hurricane hit...South FL or KDH....
Yea it was right after the black pelican I think. I think they just reopens that stretch of road like a month ago
