If against racisism, strongly speak out. If it's against a spouse, strongly throw a right hook.

What decides this dispute is if this was a private conversation.

The offender could simply dismiss anyone with "whatever said was not said to you", but others could claim that if half the people in the restaurant can hear it then it is no private conversation.

The mention of beating anyone is a stupid idea. If you threaten him, you could be offended, beaten and arrested or, if winning the fight, you could be offended and arrested. Don't think of fighting anyone unless that's what they plan for you.

Lastly, the notion of ejecting patrons for N-bombs is the dumbest idea as black people themselves use it more than all others combined.

The problem is that more people won't stand up for higher morality. Being excepted by the "crowd" is cowardice and is low self asteem.
    Higher your standards!

    YUP

Portland Maine had the kkk oust the position of an elected mayor in the 1920s...the position was just recently reintroduced, but it is still the 9 member city council and a city manager that has the power

Portland Oregon didn't really take too kindly to the mass exodus from New Orleans in 2005 due to Katrina

The only reason either of these places have a reasonably strong and vibrant urban center is because neither were highly industrialized and experienced urban white flight in the 50/60s-90s...they're both just filled with young-poor hipsters and rich white people and surrounded by towns/suburbs with even richer white people

They're also filled with disproportionate numbers of junky/transients that leach off of social programs and medical programs that keep federal funds coming in to support said rich white people

Here, when an immigrant commits a crime such as armed robbery it's like fukin native son come to life and people get all paranoid...from a mugging

DPSUP, you handled the situation well. As others have noted, it's futile to attempt to fight racist asshats - - and there's a ton of 'em out there.

You, me, The Seen have mucho in common in this respect. He's seen a pic of my ex, btw. You think it's bad now, and it is bad in many places in the good ol' USA, it was way worse back in the day. Sometimes I felt like a race pioneer (ex was Trini chocolate, Broadway actress, modern dancer...yep, smokin') - - her career involved tons of domestic & int'l travel for theatre gigs with her troupe; I'd travel to meet her at many, many places across the globe.

After a performance one evening in Louisville, KY, a white dude slowly trailed us in his pickup truck for 6 blocks as we walked along the empty sidewalks to the hotel. He didn't say a word; just trying to intimidate us. Although I gotta say, the absolute worst racist comments & actions & harassment came from the bruthas. Specifically, in Philly & DC. It would have been impossible to fight every time someone said something. We'd move away, find a way to keep on truckin' without getting into it.

Having said that, sometimes it was unavoidable. Brutha followed us out of a jazz club in Adams Morgan. Apparently, he'd been marking us all night long inside the club. Creepy. Walking to my rig on 18th Street he strode along behind us, rapid-fire talking shiiiitte. Finally he shoved me from behind. That's when I turned & dropped him with two punches. That's when he started hollering for his buddies on the bustling street. That's when we bolted for the rig, jumped in & eventually had a good laugh when we got home.

Worst places that I encountered racism when I was with the ex:
Philly (the worst, hands-down, bruthas losing their minds over the sight of us together)
    DC (country-ass inbred cracker bruthas)
Louisville, KY (crackers of the white persuasion)
Munich, Germany (locals doing 180's on the street to stare slack-jawed)
Fairfax, Virginia (we were refused service at an Applebee's because, as the waitress said, "I don't wait on those types of people")

Places where no one seemed to give a shiite & we could go in peace:
    Seattle
    Manhattan
    France
    many others

Eh, what can you do - - a friend of mine once said, "the difference with how people see an inter-racial relationship is that when I walk down the street with my wife (both white) nobody cares; when you walk down the street with your black wife, everyone, and I mean everyone has an opinion on what they see, sometimes positive, sometimes not, but always with the opinion."

well it sounds like your the type of guy to stare at his phone at outings while you leave your wife to check out the top-shape, beautiful male specimans(me). good thing i wasn't there I just had my wranglers suspension too. anyways you should tell your wife to shut her yapper if it doesn't concern her or you. and you should, well you couldn't do anything cause you had your face in your phone and if you tried doing something you would of looked like the bigger r tard. i hate racist people tho, I would of at least gave him the biggest stink eye hes ever seen if not that than a 5 finger knucle dust to the forehead instead

When i was in college a group of friends were sitting in the caffeteria talking and a guy that worked there walks up to us and says "all you honkeys do is talk, talk, talk, i hate you f'n crackers" We looked at each other, smiled and kept talking. Another time my 3 year old son was playing in a mall playground, one of those petri dishes set up in the in th middle of an indoor mall to keep kids occupied while their parents shop. My son, who loved everyone started talkingg to a little boy and within 30 seconds a big guy dressed like a street thug grabs the arm of his kid yanks him away and says to the child "i told you not to play with those discusting whiteys". What did I do? Nothing, i kissed my sons cheek and directed him to another little boy who looked like he could use a friend.

I hate using the word racism, its been so overused as a political tool its meaningless. Its acually stupidity were dealing with not racism. You cant fight stupidy and its not worth trying, the best thing to do is feel good enough about yourself and move on. Leave the idiots to rot.

After seeing so much ethnic and/or race-based hate over the course of my life, everywhere from Brooklyn to DC to the Dominican to Trini to Europe, to me it is a behavioral function of the human virus.

Meaning, there's a lot of people on this planet who must feel inadequate in some aspect of their lives, as well as seek power & control over others. So, they pull the race or religion or ethnicity lever. Globally. It's everywhere. If the Noah's ark thing really happened, I can understand why: desperate attempt to clean up the planet from the human virus. Yet, even that didn't work out so well. Look at the condition the planet is in now.

Zippy's post is a good insight - - agreed, it is people's stupidity. Combined with their seemingly-inherent need to wield power, tangible or intangible, over others using the stupid card.

so while the two may be correlated, I think stupidity and racism are distinctly different. I know people who aren't stupid, but do act like racist asshats from time to time. Yeah, politicians attempt to co-opt the term "racism" to advance their agendas but that doesn't mean it isn't there. My issue with calling racism stupidity is it plays into the (in my opinion largely false) narrative that "its all they know - through better education they will learn that its wrong"

Not buying the stupidity explanation. Many (not all) know they are being racist, are perfectly content to continue being racist, and surround themselves with people who support and reward them for their racists acts. stupidity is somewhere in that mix, but its much deeper and organic and as a society we need to come to grips with that.

Guy sounds like an idiot I'm sure he is uneducated and probably pulls in minimum wage at best so I wouldn't let it bother you. You need to laugh at idiots like that.
