How to handle racism in public?

Naw, we have been talking about it for at least 100 years--nothing or little has changed. Racism will NEVER leave this culture. It is forever here.
And we get it at home as well. Keep in mind , my wife is quebecoise and her french accent (I personally love it) often brings out the worse in morons around here. But, she always pulls me away from it as well. But we don't belabor the issue--it isn't worth the spit, print, or time. And your wife did exactly what my wife does--they are smarter than us> I suspect you and I would end up in the ER getting stitches......hahahahaha!!

Ho brudda, she sounds hot (jk...kind of). Tough call. Like AKA said you could have stepped up and got pounded. I would have had a hard time not saying something though but..... and this is something I have worked on for years....being the "bigger man" is probably the right way to go most of the time. It's tough when you have that underlying temper.

 

I think black folks might think it is worth the spit print and time. I mean there was the Civil Rights Act. Kind of a big deal. Black and white couldn't sit in the same place or use the same bathroom. DPSUP couldn't have taken his wife to that establishment and if he did they might both end up dead and nobody would be prosecuted. He lives in Florida. So there must have been some change. It wasn't because people just let things go.

 

Perhaps DSUP is smart enough to know that when he is with his wife, for her protection, it is best to walk out with her and leave trouble behind??

I don't mean any disrespect; you were there and I was not, but from the description of your wife's heritage she sounds more "brown" - meaning, she might just look like she has a tan and in the darkness of a bar her racial makeup might not even have been noticeable or the issue at all. Not asking for pics or nothin' (but feel free to provide if you feel the need, swimsuit pics are best to gauge the actual skin shade ) but are you sure you didn't get the whole wrong impression and your wife had nothing to do with it?

I've had tons of racist and reverse racist remarks, I just tend to ignore. I tend to find humor in everything. Example?

Trip to DC with my high school 30 years ago. Friend and I meet two girls in the hotel elevator and start chatting them up (we're both pretty pale and he has blue eyes).
"Where are you from?" they ask.
"Puerto Rico" we reply
"No way, we don't believe you - you guys are too white"
"No, really"
"Prove it - let's see your switchblades"
Said with a straight face - I didn't ask if they were kidding - partly because I was shocked by the question. But I did manage to come back with "Sorry, I don't have it on me, left it in my loincloth" (In hindsight, maybe she was asking to see my "switchblade"?)

The opposite happens to me all the time too- my wife is a northeastern blonde of German descent. Guy and his girl in the elevator at the mall look at us and go off in Spanish about how Americans are invading the island, taking over and generally screwing the locals. I look at him and say "Tu sabes que yo soy boricua, verdad?". Guy apologizes. Funny how people will talk behind your back but shrink when they have to stand by what they say.

In general, I just don't waste my time on racists... they say to never try to teach a pig to sing; it wastes your time and it annoys the pig.
