Coops got the right idea. Manteo has good history and aquarium is cool. Plenty of touristy things like mini golf, lazer tag, hike jockey's ridge (fly a kite)....all of these things are in the name of "spending quality time" with your girl. Great restaurants too. Head over the bridge for a day (secluded beaches!!!), Lighthouse. Summertime, there will typically be places with live music in town. Don't forget other water activities in the sound..rent a jet ski. Go fishing off of the new Jeannette's Pier (go in the evening watch the sunset fish for a few hours....it's actually cool I think. Most of all relax and chill...which I know you know how to do!!!
Right on dude, good info, I really appreciate it. Would love to book a trip in October around our anniversary. We've kind burnt out on PR and would like to stay in the states for a while.
Probably my favorite time of year on the outer banks. Early October....get a fat house for cheap, water is still warm, beaches are empty (compared to peak season), and typically still getting some goods from the tropical season and/or a low popping off depending on season
That's what i'm thinking. It's the same down in PR around that time of year, we usually go 3rd week in Oct.
Now that was funny.....and true. But that holds hope for those not with a knock-out lady, don't it?? It's kinda like releasing the big fish for another day......
1st week after Thanksgiving my best for PR.......kids back prepping for end of semester exams and term papers, adults working like crazy to earn Xmas gifts. And always a swell of some sort or another. But that is a secret, so don't tell anyone, ok??
Here's a few more things. Though I met and spent some time with your wife, I don't know much aboot her interests so I'll wing this. My siblings and I use this phrase to describe the OBX: You can do anything or you can do nothing. It's always a wonderful place to be. For me, the outer banks don't really begin until you get south of Oregon Inlet. I'll be in Buxton in August. Things to do there: laze around on the beach, visit/climb the lighthouse, explore Buxton Woods, birding/nature walk at Pea Island NWR, the Old Gray House in Buxton, Native American Museum in Frisco, the shipwreck museum in Hatteras is pretty bad ass. Take a day trip to Ocracoke or even better spend a night or two. It's quaint and kinda romantic. If you do stay over there, you can take the ATV tour of Portsmouth Island (bring 100% DEET, srsly). Up to the north there's the Wright Brothers first in flight museum. The massive dunes at Jockey ridge are cool. Mrcoop mentioned the play but Fort Raleigh historical site is cool on it's own to visit. If you're into lighthouses, you can visit the four OBX ones: Currituck, Bodie Island, Hatteras and Ocracoke. 'Wild' banker ponies roam the far north and on Ocracoke. Tons of history on these slivers of sand and if you wanna learn more visit Buxton Village Books for boatloads of local themed literature. So there's plenty of things to do or not do. You can do anything or you can do nothing.
I was in KDH last April, waves sucked while I was there, but the restaurants didn't! And the tourons hadn't inhabited the island, yet.
Yeah, we usually have to pack up and leave at the end of Oct. which is typically when the next swell is filling in and I get all despondent and go home kicking and screaming, ok not quite that bad, but it hurts my feelings lol
I mostly listed things that I've done/seen over the years. There's much more. Feel free to hit me up if you need further advise.
I actually did do the "sand reconne" at TPTSNBN on my last trip back from SB... the waves looked good that day (waist/chest+ & clean light offshores), and I was itching to get on it. However, my wife was suffering with an illness (feeling just miserable) and it was rather hot that day, so leaving her, the dog, and daughter in the hot sun swatting flies while I scored again (had already scored 5 of last 7 days) was not in the best interest of all. I did however get a good notion of the potential and the info you gave me was spot on. I can see why the place is special & if I still lived in the DC area, I would need to be making the midnight runs & getting on it every chance I could muster. Be well.
agreed - I was thinking the same yesterday morning... feet were stinging. Felt like it was warmer early last week.
I do recall that. For some reason, thought you were also going to check out Ecuador. I may be concussed, though, and missing on that item. All good, have a great summer
Fun sized bombers today. Yesterday was blown, but today rocked. Started oil-slick and got textured sideshores. It was HH to slightly OH at first, then as the tide drained out it got bigger. Peaky and better than usual given the angle. Lots of shoulders to work with. Not many barrels for me, for some reason. Saw other dudes getting shacked, I just picked the wrong waves, I guess. Still fun as heck. I am worn out, but tomorrow is going to be bigger and just as clean, supposedly.
Came home from work, stopped at the pot shop, cracked a beer after a few bongies and walked up to the beach, wasn't expecting much as SI said stronger than actual winds... Plus, I'm pretty surfed out. It's been like waist to chest the past 5 days and is surfed every morning - nothing special, but enough to keep sane. It's perfect out front of my apartment right now! Outer sand bars are holding solid 6' sets every 10 minutes. But the real magic was the inside sandbar. Perfect 3-4' liners, with punch. Got two bombs then caught a handful of gems on the inside! The rip sucked Coque, but whatever. Get out and run down the beach and do it again.
Great sessions in Belmar past two days. Waves have been right around waist high with the occasional stomach/chest high set. Tide has been fat in the evening when I go but it's been a lot of fun. Took out the funboard yesterday and the groveler today. I hope everyone else is scoring. Our water has been extremely clear and it's been sunny & warm finally. Fair weather surfers are every where though. Dawn patrol and evening sessions are the go to.
More of the same here today in my slice of the PNW, Poorly formed headhigh drops that mush out into closeouts or knee high shoulders. The jetty was almost working today, and tempted two of my buddies to paddle out. Me and my coworker sat on the beach and bull****ed after watching the conditions and judging them not quite worth it for a day post training season where we gotta be up for a preparedness drill at 5 tomorrow. My friends were out of the water within half an hour after a lackluster session, narrowly dodging a few charges from 400 pound + sea lions in the throngs of mating season. Woulda gone out, but my knee is feeling a little bunk after carrying lots of fire equipment (hose, etc) up and down the hill day in and day out for training. This time its the front of the knee under the knee cap, thinking ACL or meniscus but went on a 5 mile hike today in full gear and it felt better so thinking i can probably walk it off and get salty this weekend. Either way, today was a necessary rest day after work. The good news: got to see a pod of grey whales again, seem to be coming by in the lineup almost every day. -swell is building and i have faith it will be good again one of these next few days if the wind and tides cooperate -living a two minute walk to the beach with multiple point and reef breaks within a 30 minute drive -theres always a wave in the PNW -starting to narrow down some of the spots here and got a couple solid overhead barrels on my birthday last week -Fire seasons coming, so nows my time to be poor, drink water beer, and plan my travels for next off season
