Been thinking about this a while, watching too much walking dead and ish...but makes me think that something to some extent could be possible someday (not sayin sci-if zombies and ish, but maybe just real people going crazy...kinda like what happens all the time, but the masses)

Anywho, for a dude that has next to no far-ahrms 'sperience, where would one begin, and what is best to protect family...also, must be some care probably taken to storing said equipment away from stupid kids, right?

I know, I know...as soon as I get some real advice and discussion from this post I'll go fokin kill myself

Yes, please please please join a range and get some training. I've been around guns all my life. One uncle was a gunsmith, my Dad used to build muzzle loaders and do those cowboy match shooting comps, and my other uncle could outfit a small platoon. And he's by far the best shot of them all with all kinds of diff weapons. He bet my Dad once he could shoot a bat out of the air with a pistol and I'll be da-mned if he didn't focking do it. Unreal.

    Get some real training amigo.

As for your question, that really depends on the situation. A .380 with a proper fragging type round can do some real damage and is easy to conceal, and tends to stop when it hits something. A hot 9mm round that doesn't frag can go through sheetrock and keep right on going. Not so good in an apt type situation. Of if you got others in the house.

Shotguns are fantastic for home D. Buckshot and a barely legal barrel and you don't have to be a crack shot, esp. when the adrenaline is pumping.

Bigger, heavier rounds have great knockdown power, but IMHO it's harder to hit the target, but maybe that's just me. I haven't really been into shooting in years, only have two left (a Walther PPK and a Henry rifle replica), but back in the day I could draw and fire the ppk quick and put a nice tight grouping, but not near as good with the .357 mag or the .45.

If you got kids take all that into consideration. Revolver ain't gonna jam, but is easier for a kid to get a hold off. One of the better systems I've seen is a lock box you can keep on a nightstand that you can punch a quick code in and get to it easy, but keeps it safe from anyone else.

Lots to consider, and I highly recommend you don't go down that path lightly. Like surfing, you will have to put in the time to feel comfortable, and not be trigger happy. Trigger happy is pretty much the worst way to be.

    Hope my humble .02 helps.

Fun convo. In your house a 12 gauge and bird shot will kill but won't go through walls as easily. Short barrel will make it easier. Any handgun is great but a revolver will limit your rounds and even with a speed reloader you're not going to go ge as fast as a semi-auto. That said, revolvers don't jam.

Now for the fun. Get an AR. Not for home protection unless you buy the rounds that won't go through your house and a couple of your neighbor's. .223/.556 options are limitless. You can get ones that will not penetrate 2 sheets of drywall but that's not what they're made for. Actually they were meant to penetrate a rib cage and bounce around a bit. If you're worried about zombies or the masses this is you thang. Also deer. It's good for hunting. I love sitting out at 200+ yards and smacking metal. Get a metal sheet and ring it. It's the best.

Long guns are the best. It's a fact. Infantry goes to their .45 when there's nothing new else left. Also get a .45.

What did I miss....something happened...? Maybe I hit a time warp or a seam in the continuum & that could account for my brief vanishment. Time flies, it doesn't exist anymore, it's a really odd existentialist mashup for me these dayz.

Been texting with The Seen, wanted to make sure that he & his newly expanded fam are all good in the hood. And driving the death desk, well, it's consuming. Butt the concerne is appreciated, Buoyz!

    I like my Glock.

I also like my Ruger LCR, 5 shot revolver, double action. Around $450.00 here in The Old Dominion.

It's my 'walkin' around' piece. Esp when I'm strolling with ol' Wally. If we were to get jumped by the pit bulls who routinely tug the clueless neighborhood lady around on their walks, there would be carnage. In the sense that no way could I stop those things from destroying Mister Wally (95 lb 11 yr old Golden, and he can fight, but no way could he beat a pit). And probably shredding me, too, as I piled in with my Buck knife and/or a bat. So, I wanted a piece that would resolve any close-in issues without insane firepower.

If buying this model, do not let them talk you into the semi automatic, LCP – it just complicates matters.
I would ask their advice on whether to get the LCR in the 38 Special +P cartridge size which is aluminum framed or the LCR in 357 Magnum cartridge size in the steel frame. The 357 will shoot 38 specials, but the 38 Special will not shoot 357 Magnums.

I like the steel frame as long as it is black, but the 357 is an awful lot of firepower and has a hell of a kick in a small revolver. Keep in mind you are going to be shooting this thing from less than 10 feet away and at that point a 22 lr will do the job.

    And....what TLo said +1

My two cents, read as much as ya can about proper handling techniques, you can also take a firearms safety class and go to a range. A lot of places will rent you a pistol or whatever. These might help you figure out exactly what ya want out of owning a firearm. Hobby, fun, protection. I only have two at the moment and I just applied for my concealed about a month ago.

Fun at the range, Ruger SR9

12 gauge is by far the best for home defense. get a shorter barreled one. Load the first 2 rounds with heavier bird shot then back those up with buck.I keep that and an h&k 40 s& in the night stand, a S&w 44 mag snub nose revolver in the entry way, S&w 9mm in the kitchen and H&k 9mm in the downstairs bathroom (just in case im taking a crap and somebody breaks in).

Id do training at a gun range that offers home defense training. Also make sure you CLEARLY understand the gun laws in your state.

I have a few shotguns strategically stashed around the house. My preference on a handgun is a 9mm with a full clip.

Personally, I have trigger locks on all, having personally lost a family member who had free access to a family firearm and turned it on himself.

Practice by shooting neighborhood teenagers--they are nothing but human larvae anywys!! They eat everything and still cannot fly on their own. (just kidding, folks)
I used to have a S&W revolver 357 as a trooper.. Lots of kick to it, but it could take a door off the house, if I needed it too. The hollow point bullets helped do that. But that was years ago. Presently, I am unarmed and I do not buy in to all the crap about Armageddon, etc. But then again, I live in NH.........

I don't own any guns but I use to shoot with my Dad all the time, but he sold all his guns after a while. I really liked the 9mm Browning and 357 Magnum Smith & Wesson Revolver, his .22 was fun but weak in comparison, .38 was ok too.
