shyt who wouldn't want to surf jbay, its the pinnacle of all surfing.

now when we start comparing sharks lol.....I don't look at it like jbay is sharky.i look at it like south Africa is sharky.they had sharknets in capetown for decades, for a good reason, and people still get seriously injured or killed.never been there, just read a lot of books lol.

theres mainly 3 spots that are super hairy.nor cal, south Africa, west oz.maneaters live there.theres a lot of shark activity in so cal,but mostly juvenile great whites, which are the ones ur likely to get bit by...but yea south Africa is the kind of place where you will probably die if u get bit..

now as far as medina goes.didnt read the story just read a few pages on here..my guess is he doesn't feel he can play it safe there, and that's what he does in all events.he'll charge pipe and chopes, but he wont be taking off on the bombs.i wouldn't call him a wimp,im not a fan,but the kid can surf.he does lack power surfing tho,and in my eyes that's everything other than the toobs.

People say the wave doesn't suit his surfing, but funny thing is he's been in the event twice and he came in 5th both times... Not too bad.

I think the shallow reef at pipe is much scarier than sharks. I wouldn't want a encounter with either one. But my point is I don't think the guys voted yes to seem tough. Jbay is an amazing wave. Isn't that enough. These guys surf crazy spots. I don't think they need to vote yes to act tough

Not what I meant. I meant there probably is more guys who would vote no if it was anonymous. I'm sure plenty surf it because it's an amazing wave, but I'm sure some do it despite their reservations to avoid ridicule, because they are expected to be tough and to not have fear of any wave or sharks. They are expected to surf any spot any time. It's the expectations to be tough that I'm talking about.

I don't think so. The fear is the unknown. And knowing whats there, but not being able to see it...
I've surfed very shallow reefs and have not been scared at all. And these guys have so much more talent... Knowing there is big sharks around and not seeing them will scare most people... Just because they are great surfers does not mean they are immune to fear.

I actually don't think J Bay is such a bad wave for Gabriel. His backside hacks are pretty decent and he can generate speed on his backside pretty well. Jeffries has always struck me as a wave that gets you high scores if can come up vertical and just slam the wave right in the pocket...repeatedly...he does that on his backside. Kind of like Occy used to be able to do there. It was a bit clunky, but the powerful backside hacks get you points.

The amazing style that guys like Curran, Slater, and Parko have on that wave, connecting turns, flowing, is undeniably far more pleasing to watch, and is a beautiful thing. Unfortunately, that flow isn't really as big a part of scoring as the individual turns are, and there aren't that many guys right now who can pull that flowing style off to begin with.

The reason you are all discussing this brainless wonder is because he is marketable--he sells well. Look at Surfline--they adore him. Every other daily article is about him, or another marketable surfer. It sells product. Surfline is not so much about surfing anymore--it is People magazine whose people just "happen" to surf. It has deteriorated and is why so many of you spend so much time wondering about what kind of underwear your favorite surfer wears. Your videos are nothing more than "peep holes" into their lives, i.e., what color is their favorite, etc.
That is my July 4th rant. Now you all go and stick a Roman Candle up youz asses, light it, and splatter the world with more hot colorful feces.....

Actually no, it's not because he's marketable. It's because of the way he surfs and his fear of sharks... If I bought a bunch of Rip Curl stuff you could say that, but not if we are talking his surfing

But after any contest he is in, I ALWAYS go buy Ripcurl products!!!!
And because he told me to!!!

According to this site the only recent incidents have been Mick's slugfest last year and a fatality in 2013.

For comparison there were five incidents reported around Cocoa Beach in 2015.

Mick's odds of getting tagged again by a GW at the same place probably works in his favor.

Jbay is the perfect storm of worst and best case scenarios. Eatin alive vs besthander of your life. They already took Reunion off the tour and if this new detection thing doesn't work (I don't buy it) Jbay is next. Medina has no credibility to stand on given the disadvantages stated but I don't blame him for saying eff that after Fanning.

they need to bring the "rip curl pro search" contest back.for those that never heard or saw one, each year they would pick a random epic spot during its peak season and its always pumping wherever they go.

and medina is marketable for a reason.rip curl is picking up customers now like how quicksilver did with slater in the 90s.its all a business, the surfing is just the modeling photoshoots for these products, like boardshorts,etc..

and again, south Africa is sharky.j bay is just the well known spot in s.africa, theres dozens and dozens of similar set ups that u rarely hear about.anybody that remembers the "drive through" series, they did one for south Africa with shane dorian, pottz, yadin, the 1 chubby dude that rips, and a few others.the waves they were surfing were blowing j bay away, they did surf jbay too.but you will see, almost every session they had, they got chased in by sharks.every session lol...those drive through series tho, very very good flick

Yeah man, and I miss those drive through series, just for the surfing in places like that, places I may never see
