This is so on point. residents of oceanfront communities put tremendous pressure on their elected officials to make sure their town (or neighborhood) provides at least the amenities of the next town. These folks have millions tied up in properties and if they see any hint that the next town has done something to make themselves more exclusive, more insulated from noise/riff-raff, provides a better (problem-free) experience for their families/renters they will DEMAND their town follow suit. Little matters like public roads, public access are just obstacles to be steamrolled over.
Another observation since I live a town over; what the hell do these JAPs do all day that they need slaves, er i mean housekeepers, to watch the kids? Raise your children beetches. How much yoga and playing on facebook can you possibly do? They make them dress up in some degrading slave costumes. Ridiculous.
I'm sympathetic but be real - people limit parking on their streets in so, so many beach towns all over the place. Pretty much most MA towns have very limited parking for non-residents outside of places which are beach destinations like Hull, Gloucester, Marshfield, etc... Away from the beach, in Boston there are tons of neighborhoods with resident only parking stickers. Actually blocking beach access like people tried to do in Malibu is far more insidious than a parking ban.
That's there... and I'm not informed enough to comment on what happens in MA. In the town north of me, Sea Bright, there's resident parking only on some streets because there's just no space for homeowners to park their own cars. I get that. In my town, there's parking lots that are permit only... and anybody can buy one. I get that, too. But in Deal there is no shortage of parking. The lots are huge, most homes have driveways and parking areas on their own properties that could hold a dozen cars. The streets are wide, with tons of space for parking cars, AND THEY NEVER GET FULL. The only reason they're pushing for a parking ban within three blocks of the beach is to keep the beaches to themselves. Let's call a spade a spade here. These are wealthy people who want create a private community with private beaches paid for with taxpayer dollars. And we shouldn't stand for it.
The entire length of Ocean Ave of Sea Bright and Monmouth Beach should have parking along the wall and regular access points over it. NJ residents are getting screwed with beach access up and down our coast. It's time this nonsense ended, especially since we are all paying for these "new" beaches.
What Deal is doing is no different than what has been done in Sea Bright and Monmouth Beach. Private parking, "private" walkways over the great wall of China. F all these towns and their attempts to keep the public off their beaches None of it is right....
What?? Are you kidding?? Towns should absolutely keep out low income people. In fact, they should put them to work for at least 20 hours a day!! So that they can "un-poor" themselves....or die in the process. I mean, who cares about poor people?? They should NOT be allowed to surf. BRRRRRRPPPPPP!!!!!!!! Now if you don't mind I am going to get in my expensive rich Land Rover and find a nice beach, private beach. to go surfing. My friends own several.....
best part is those are mostly summer homes, nobody really lives there, its like vacation homes, something like that.all winter long the streets are dead,no activity, summer is a different story.and they do have big azz streets with plenty of parking,i honestly don't get it,they are so special they are entitled to the streets where their house is and all the property around it including the ocean. iv hopped quite a few fences there back in the day in the winter time.im sure that's a concern for them lol,but I don't do stuff like that if theres people around.they do have some nice beaches lol.. most beaches in nj are for private residents who rarely go on the beach, let alone actually go in the water lol.the ocean is the ocean, nobody owns it,in my eyes atleast.il always find a way to get in her lol. last summer I went to lb,it used to be if ur surfing u got on the beach for free.not anymore,so I walked north to the next beach, beach badge again lol..walk a little further, debating whether or not to just hop in the car.keep walking mb isn't too far lol.got to mb,which is private...and free..and it was great lol..it was a decent hike holding 2 boards.thats just how it is surfing in the summer time here, unless u want to actually buy a beach badge and surf with a ton of ppl
Yup, I have to drive one block!! A whole block!!! You dont expect me to walk, do you?? That is what poor people do!!! And my "lady servant" will carry my board to the waters edge........
I hope She gets your laundry done and some food on the table and tidy the place up while your surfing!
You must be talkin boot 7 Prez. LB is free for surfers and fishermen. If you did get hassled, next time tell em they are wrong, it has always been free, and just go. They've tried to make The Pit a swimming area by putting up a lifegaurd stand and ropes, but i swam out there in the middle of the night several time and cut the ropes until they got the hint. That's right kiddies, you can thank me for keepin The Pit open to surfers in the summer. Hasn't been crowded at all this spring/summer. Caught several days with decent surf all by my lonesome. Parking can be a b!tch, but I'm fortunate enough to only have to walk/bike/skate 2 blocks. BTW what's goin on with this proposed ban. Down there yesterday with the dog. No hassles.
Yea- any news on this?? It doesn't surprise me that they try this again... It's ridiculous. Only from Memorial Day to Labor Day- other wise all those beach front houses have all thier curtains pulled and blinds closed. I don't surf there anymore since I don't have time to drive 25 min when I could just surf down here (at the best break around 2 min away- Belmar) BUT like LBCrew said- it's all about beach access. Once they do it... So will all the other ritzy towns (like Belmar)
Btw OP- thanks for the posting this. The artical kinda burns me up, first sentence : " The borough plans to introduce an ordinance at its public meeting on Wednesday evening that will require residential permit parking on nearly a dozen streets with beach access points" I think I back to when I used to surf there often- about 10 yrs ago and prior- I never... NEVER... Saw a resident parking thier car on the street. Or even a friend of the residents... Most of these houses have long and big drive ways- and large front yards- it doesn't make sense to even park in the street since the walk would be so long... What ever...
The sea wall in sea bright & mom beach is owned by the state. People put up stairs and signs that say private. It's akin to putting you beach chair on the sand and saying only I can sit in it.
You're right. The wall isn't there to keep people off the beach... and the private access stairs are private because the beachfront property owners own the beach down to the high tide mark, so those stairs are their private property. Sea Bright has provided public access, and many beaches are free (as they should be, if they don't have guards, services, etc.). The problem is parking, and I agree that the strip along the sea wall should be acquired through eminent domain.
There is public access at the municipal beach lot in town. From that lot to Sandy Hook where is there access? None that I know. That's over 2 miles of private beach with no parking and no access.
