Yeah, I know. A lot of my friends have gone. My only real objection to an Indo boat trip is not the boat, not the barrels, reefs, big waves or any of that. But the flight time would really suck for my taste. I have no tolerance for real long flights. I can barely tolerate when we go to Europe. The only reason I do is because my beautiful wife likes to go, so I go with her. Flying to PR even, from Boston, an under 4 hour trip even makes me nuts. I wish we could do the "Beam me up Scotty" thing by now, but I will not live long enough to see that........ And I do not like taking drugs to make it tolerable. For me, flying is so yesterday.
Personally, in all seriousness (Belmar aside) I have also contiplated the big move in my younger years. After much travel to some great locations with amazing waves- I came to the conclusion: we actually don't have it too bad here at home on the east coast. My reasons being: 1. Moving out of the USA is a no go personally for myself- so sticking to the US. (Family) 2. All other spots that are good are also very very crowded- in and out of the water. 3. All the spots in the US also have thier flat days. And places like Hawaii with bigger/better surf - after a while of surfing better surf- most surfers would consider anything under chest hi as flat. 4. A few places that get really good are always cold... And empty /lonely So I came to the conclusion that NJ really isn't that bad. We have about 3 months of crowded when the waves are small. We usually have a great spring/ fall and winter. The crowds are not as bad as most places. And empty most of the year. Plus- this year- Over all the surf has not seemed that crowded compared to the last 10 years... Maybe surfing has lost some of its hype? Idk - I'm content here... Although I'm not going to lie- there are days I dream of surfing other places (many days lol)
So, I don't know where the absolute most consistent swell is. Butt I can tell you where it will be. When the WSL / Slater build their KellyWave pool, that's going to take the title of most consistent wave ever. Their biz model for that operation is to build their perfect barreling Kelly Wave in regions where land & power is inexpensive. Because the wave pool requires large amounts of both. With an airport not more than 90 mins drive. Move there, if you're a young buck. Get a job at the wave pool. Local apartments will have low rent, there's plenty of open land for moto or bmx, inexpensive houses if you buy, and the best part: you surf a perfect wave 200, 300 times per week. No sharks, no wondering about conditions, no getting skunked. As a related item, you just know the WSL is contracting with Marriott or another hotel chain to plunk lodging down near the facility. Interesting opportunities will derive from this Kelly Perfect Wave. I would say relocate to Austin, Texas for Doug Coors wave pool, but Austin is blowing up: fastest growing city in America. Costs for everything are jacking along with the population influx. So, wait for the Kelly Wave IMHO.
i would love to if i was in doubt id throw on a long spring and just bounce of the reef. not orange and no helmit leave that for roy.
lol monohans is overated and crowded. although sometimes it gets pretty good. If its good tho, theres some other crannies around there that are better and no ones out. Well maybe i just hate on it because i got washed clean over it to the other side one time......
Sounds like a marketing plan is formulated already!! I saw a TV advertisement for Mazda this morning--the reason they give for buying their new SUV is so you can go find a "secret surf spot" with it........sad, but true.
+1 Like many spots around that way it's one peak and 10 guys. Short ride. Barely even barrels. It's called heavy, but it's actually mushy compared to a proper barreling beach break or even a good reef. Boulders to crash into and f yourself up. Needs a solid swell to even break, so it's flat most of the time. Most of the rock reefs are overhyped mush. I'd take a session at any decent beach break over the dock. Unfortunately we don't have many. Gansett is way below average and other spots are fickle. Matunuck is a good rock reef if you longboard and don't mind a huge crowd, but don't even bother with your shortboard. Dock. I don't for the life of me understand the hype and seeing all the out of state plates from places that get better surf in ny/nj. No localism here. I welcome my out of state friends, but just don't understand why'd they'd driver 3-5 hours. Dock Beach break
It's definitely a long trip....especially on the way back. Even with Singapore Air and all the great things there, your still traveling a solid 20 hours to destination. It's way worth it though. Your not going to surf the best places in the world unless you fly. PR is great and has it's moments but for consistency, I don't know. You can get burned going there, even in the peak season.
Yup, one can get burned going to PR on waves. Lately, I have been lucky. I have a trip scheduled for December (early in month) so I am keeping my fingers crossed. The despicable Surfline cams will tll me a few days ahead whether to bring my own board, or rent. That is, of course, if their cams haven't been destroyed by natives.....again.
If we're thinking of the same place with poles god almighty that was where I spent most of my wintre/spring days..
Dang, Rhody is holdin'...thanks for the pic Shelldone, I'm gonna bring 10 Seattllites on LibTechs and blow up that Secret Spot lol
Dude EC wintres give me serious shrinkage, and might cause self-esteem issues if I'm rejected by said Canadiennes. But if Bianca Beauchamp is there, I'm willing to suffer some humiliation.
