Not really on topic, but I'm sharing anyways.
I was in santa cruz surfing one of the middle peaks @ PP on a good weekend day, so there were lots of wavestorms out. A bunch of helicopters flew over us and were circling and a guy in the lineup asked what they were doing. I said in a loud voice that they do that when there are sharks in the water.
About half the people on that peak paddled in.

That's great. I have a kinda running joke with my wife. Every time a copter flies by at the beach I yell out "Shark Patrol!" I even started doing sometimes when surfing with others.

You're having a fun lil sesh (just picture it in your mind...like thigh to stomach high with no wind and lined up with a lik wall)

Guy comes out, blows waves, drifts, finally makes his way back to within 20 feet and says "you even catching anything?" Or "not a good day to surf, eh?"

Best part is, you've called them off of waves/hollered to not drop in. Nothing a hole, just had that happen a few times. Typical of VB. don't live there. I quit that place.

You say something and everyone so butt hurt. You are now the Larry David of surfing

This is a real thing on Cape Cod the last few years. The state has started tagging and tracking the growing Great White population and it's not uncommon in the summer now to see the "spotter" plane cruise over you, and it's horrifying when it loops back and does a lazy circle just outside the peak. Last year the tagging boat was so close one day you could see the guy on the bow with the radio tag tipped harpoon.

Probably not the dumbest, but still pretty dumb: Yesterday, I'm riding the second wave of a set, I pull off early as a longboarder is down with his board on the inside of him. Not wanting to surf over his leash, and nearing the end of my ride anyway I just pulled off. He said something like nice wave. I said thanks and notice his board is in towards the beach so I mentioned I pulled off because I figured he had a leash and I didn't want to run over it. He says something to the effect of "Oh, I never wear a leash with this thing, it's so heavy if it hits me in the head I'm done." I look back to see the board careening towards the kids playing in the ankle high surf on the inside.

In his defense that was the only time I saw him lose the board, and the waves weren't exactly powerful enough to hurl the board towards the people on the inside, but still really?

Get over it. If I can get away with no leash im doing it. It practices board control and if you do loose it you get a work out having to go get it.

Ive never lost a board and had it hit someone. My buddy took a board out while he was learning and it whaled me in the head. He smiled and said sorry....but I don't think he realized how much it hurt.

Are you just a square or are you a newbie? If you are good enough to kick out to avoid running over his leash you must be a decent surfer. In order to get that good at surfing you must understand surfing without a leash even if you don't choose to do it. So I don't get it?

I think what he means is there is a time and a place for it, and that time is not when there is a bunch of kids on the inside just waiting to get hit

    I love you man.

But that wasn't a goodbye post, 'twas a goodbye thread before o micah abandonned us. I think it was in response to the initial whip crack when they started banning everyone. I'm a lyfer brah, I'm never leaving this place.

yeah. you're right. idk why I got so into it last post. Probably because I surfed without a leash in the same situation yesterday, his post hit too close to home.

Oh man I know this all too well. It's like calling last run at the top of the hill when you are snowboarding. It's almost guaranteed that something sh1tty is going to happen.

I know if I hear it I'll just give that guy the next wave so they will GTFO sooner

No, I'm not a newbie. I've been surfing long enough to know at some point, the board gets away from every surfer. A crowded weekend on a NJ beach is not a great time for that. You hit someone, they might get hurt. It reflects poorly on surfers. No need to give anyone reason to limit surfing more than they already do in the summer. It's easy to practice board control with a leash; wear one, but surf as if your not wearing one.
