I've heard some good things from people that of went and stayed in Peru for a few months. I guess you have the occasional earthquakes I don't wake you up in middle the night. But other than that the food and surf is cheap. I guess you can get some good prices on Room n board/food so no worries. I thought about given prove go in the near future to be honest. Only thing I hear is be cautious and Lima

hike to machu picchu the local's way, drink ayahuasca at night on an empty stomach.
you have your whole life to surf, which may very well be never the same after you do said things.

super jelly right now. have fun!

Well maybe, but going to El Peru and not seeing Macchu Picchu is kinda like going to France and not seeing the the Eiffel Tower.

But I digress. Peru has always been on my bucket list, so I'm slightly jelly.

    Do it.

I have been to Peru and traveled around. You have to see Machu Picchu...it's insane. One of the coolest places I have been and I have traveled to 35 different countries and have been to many "Wonders of the World and World Heritage Sites". lt's unbelievable how they constructed it when you look at the elevations and deep valleys and nothing but 8000ft peaks around it. They did not use mortar and the granite stones have compound cuts on as many as 6 sides of each rock to allow them to fit together like abstract legos. All stones of different sizes too in order to prevent vibrations of similar frequencies that would ultimately topple the structures in an earthquake....not to mention completing all of this with crude tools on hard granite.
Take the Vistadome train as well through the valleys of the Andes mountains to get a perspective on life. When it takes corners and you can see the length of the train against the size of the Andes mountains, it's humbling and makes you feel like you are on a toy train.

I liked Cusco a lot. Bought a bunch of art there from a local museum.

I did make it to Lima and called a local shaper south of Lima who drove an hour to Lima to pick me up, drove me back down south, fed me breakfast, gave me a surfboard to ride, drove me to 3 breaks, left me to surf at Punta Roca for 4hours, picked me back up, fed me again, then drove me back to the hotel and charged me $60 USD. Think i tipped him $40. He gave a brochure and his place is right on the beach, but doesn't break in all swell directions. You can easily find other spots breaking within 20 min drive. He said it was small, but it was 8-10'...and watch out for manatees...lots of them. Also, his prices for lodging and surfgear rental was super cheap. If I find the pamphlet, I will post it.

    Enjoy

If and only if there is a big swell running- head up to chicama , don't travel at night. Try to get a local to go with you- sometimes you can find one and pay him by day to go... Then when the police pull you over he will be able to get you out of the mess.

Also- it's a great area.. But like others said just be careful you can find your self in trouble fairly quick...

Went there years ago to a place, can't remember the name off hand. Where they have the Big Wave contest Pico Alto. Numerous breaks in walking distance, was never flat. More good spots 15-20 minute ride south from there. Handful of good points about 3 hours North from there. Dirt cheap. Tried to spend all the cash I brought and couldn't do it.

I've been there a few times in the 90's. Great Surf but the country is a crap hole. Be prepared to get intestinal virus's, robbed/held hostage. (even by the policia, they pulled me over once and siphoned off my gas)
The women where great by the way.
I would go again. Skip machu picchu, it doesn't break. I skipped the Eiffel Tower when I surfed France also

Hey Twin fin! I totally agree... Not much has changed when I went there a few times in 2000's ... Got pulled over by the police who kept insisting that our van was reported stolen... Had contracted intestinal parasite... Skipped Machu Picchu... Did get chicama one time (also got the parasite there)... They did have good coffee in Lima, and the polica actually helped me out in Lima (I was unknowingly about to get abducted one late drunk night in Lima (when mr Belmar used to drink)) the police man saw what was happening and pulled me aside- said some things in Spanish that I didn't understand... I showed him the key to the hotel I was staying and we jumped on the back of his police dirt bike motorcycle- craziest ride thru Lima- he was all over the sidewalk and everything... Thank ful tho for that guy...

Anyways- MR TWIN FIN - I noticed your new around here- I would suggest starting an official hello threade to properly introduce yourselfe. Just tell us all about yourself- where you surf ect..

    Your pal
    Mr Belmar

Go north to chicama and mancora. Always try to talk down prices with cabs and hostels. I stayed at a hostel named el delfin or el sueño? I forget. It was like $15 a night. I did a road trip from Lima to Mancora a couple years ago.

There's a lot of awesome breaks people dont know about in northern Peru. If you can keep going north go to Ecuador. Inbox me if you want more info

Barry, thats still not a reason not to see it.
thats like saying - hey you shouldn't surf, it's been done before.
you have to experience things on your own and for yourself.
otherwise you're just taking someone's word for it.
as much as i respect your señority and opinion, thats just no way to live life.
stay thirsty, my friend, and experience as much as you can.

    one love.
