For the first time in recorded history, from 11:25 AM to 2 PM yesterday, Strathmere was better than OCNJ.
I know what your thinking. "How could that be Chavez? You cannot be in two places as once so how would you know?"
Well, at the time Waverly was too deep and the only break working north end was North Street. Soooo, everybody was there. Plus it was gray, dank. Ominous clouds lurked overhead creating a fear and loathing type atmosphere.
I went to Strathmere. It was all sunshine, unicorns, and naked mermaids on clam shells.
Surfers (mostly logs) spread out for 5 blocks catching waist high peaks. I smiled, grabbed my bort, and found me self a nice left wit no one on it. Everyone was smiles and sunshine. It almost made me sick.
I had to tell myself to stop waiting for some a-hole to come and ruin it. Always negative Chavez. Enjoy the moment. Hop on a clam shell with a naked mermaid. Ride the waist high peaks to the beach. Yuck it up with the other guys out there. So I did.

Thanks, we're doing good in Melbourne, the outer bands are making it's way through, next few hours will be wet and windy, but should hopefully clear up later today. Those on the West Coast and Northern part of the state are getting it the most. My family still lives in the Clearwater / Dunedin area and they said their yard is under water but it's not in the house so they're ok too.

Cool. The news made it look bad but not catastrophic.

Me and the crew were there for a few hours early today. At first the waves looked dumping. As the morning wore on they became more fun to ride, small knee to thigh high and clean. The sea lice were out in full force and the moon jellies, but I will take those any day over the thick seaweed we had last weekend :)

Scored a few nice rides, at least one had a decent drop to it. Saw Valhalla with his wife. Saw him get a nice ride too on a thigh high peeler.

Def were down a notch from yesterday. And sadly it was pretty crowded by 9:00 with people dropping in left and right. There were these two adorable teen girls, outstanding surfers and outstanding kids: they were riding tandem, jumped off one board and onto another-- what a pleasure to see such fun loving healthy teens!

Maybe tomorrow will be better. Monday's forecast is definitely better with some clean thigh to waist high, and that's got me pretty excited!

Gaston swell was nothing serious on Cape Cod and very tide dependant but overall was a great week to be a surfer up here. The low tide was just before dawn most of the week, winds were light and sort of offshore, and there was a period about mid-tide each morning where the swell seemed happiest, the size picked up to chest plus and the sections, while still fast, started to link up. Wednesday morning the swell had dropped a touch but the wind was perfect for a time and I caught an incredible wave. I was out deep and paddled into the biggest set of the morning, maybe touching shoulder high, pumped twice then crouched down into a beautiful little cover up and got shot out clean. Then the wave opened up on the inside bar and I managed a few solid turns before gliding into the shallows with my whole body buzzing with that shot of adrenaline a great ride gives you. Pure magic.

Low tide made the early mornings pretty small but damn if they weren't stunning.

This is after the tide filled in a bit much and the waves got fat but you can see how they were peeling across the sand.

Fu*k N A... This morning was super fun. Stayed at my moms house in NY hoping to crack it, but assumed the wind would be blasting.
Glad every weather report was wrong. Got out at first light with 2 friends and it was firing. Head high, 10mph offshore and lining up down the beach. Surfed a spot that we knew wouldn't have a crowd and it was perfect. 2 more guys showed up around 8 and they were friends as well. 4 hours of awesomeness with just 4 friends. Couple of little barrels early when the tide was lower. As it filled in there was just long perfect walls. Even a few rights.
Wind was getting stronger when we got out, but still super fun.

That's what's up dude! Despite a dismal forecast I got out at sunrise and was blessed with thigh - waist 11-12 sec long lines. A few were a little bigger. I took the LB for a spin and it was perfect for the wave on tap.

I never surf without a leash but today as I went to attach it at the waters edge, I looked and realized the leash string was missing. Forgot I took it off to put in my 8 footer the other day because that one is now on my wife's foamie lol rather than go back home to get it I said F it, threw my leash on the sand and paddled out, had the place to myself, so no worries if it got away from me.

In 2hrs and after dozens of long rides, I only lost my board twice, and only because I forgot I wasn't wearing a leash. I made almost every wave and kicked out at the end. Surfing without a leash for sure helps you pay attention to proper technique. Don't try this at home kids...

    Yeah DPSUP!!

Just got back from a superfun and surprising sunrise sesh!

The buoy read a dismal 1.3' and SI read 1.0 and dropping, but it was a long interval. Walking down the boardwalk and "Do my eyes deceive me--wow! " this girl was on a wave up to her shoulder which I guess is like a mans waist. So I was somtotally stoked :)

There were lulls where the waves were like knee high, but plenty of waist highs kept pumping in with the incoming tide, it got a little crowded within an hour, but still a well behaved lineup of guys who are locals. One of the guys, when I asked how the buoy could be so off, said, the long 12" interval is also key-- I learned something,

The waves were so much better than yesterday, it was no comparison. .. And here I was thinking of sleeping in due to the dismal forecast. Totally go before you know.

One guy showed me this huge snail shell he found on the sandbar, about a foot long with live snail inside it, I talked him into returning it to the water. My good deed of the day :) tomorrow is round four. God it's nice to be off work four days in a row, right?

Saturday was not too bad. It was good to see you and the others since we'd not been up in a month but I was hoping for a bit more size. Air, water and wind were perfecrt though. My wife hadn't surfed since then and it was perfect for her. I had a handful of decent rides but I think she got more waves than I did.

The jellies were only around for a little while. I didn't think it was all that crowded until later. The cam was down most of the day. I didn't see the two girls you mention but there was a dad on a SUP with his two young daughters riding up front catching tons of waves. They were having a blast.

The waves started out in the knee high range but got bigger and more consistent for aboot two hours around hoi toide. By noon the winds kicked up and gave some texture and the waves dropped off with the tide. By then all the families were there and the water too full of swimmers to have fun. Time to go. We'll be back next Saturday.

We're forecast to get some groundswell from Hermine down here peaking on Tuesday. First actual swell since Cinco de Mayo for us in the shadow. My buddy and I are planning to hit a reef spot that needs a longer period wave to work. If not, our favorite sandbar should be fine.

I'm done with summer already. Bring on the cold fronts.
