B\c, ya know, he was a winner, and everyone loves a winner, right?

He rode to power on a wave of popularity and was beloved by the common Roman. They saw him as a benevolent protector that would make everything right and were willing to give up their liberty for the promise that he'd take care of them, and make Rome great again. The Senate (who were a bunch of self serving corrupt ass hats) hated him b\c he was a threat to their power.

He brought civil war to Rome, turned on his friend and mentor Pompey and ran him to death and ruin, then declared himself dictator for life. The people of Rome then realized their Republican Democracy was dead, their power to vote or have any say so at all in their future was gone forever.

The nobles responded by murdering him, setting off another civil war. Eventually that was resolved, but Rome never became a Republican Democracy ever again. The people lost their power forever. Some think that the eventual death of the Roman Empire was sealed the day Cesar crossed the Rubicon.
