don't let the extra time to get to Malpais/Santa Teresa or Nosara deter from going there. Jaco, Manual Antonio and even Tamarindo are easier to get to and to stay but IMHO MalPais/Santa Teresa and Nosara are just better. I have been to all of them too. Have fun!

you guys are tripping, too cool for school, too cool for yourselves, I don't know... I just got back from my third trip to costa, scored waves every single day and yes I was based out of Tamarindo. Nobody got eaten, raped, or run over by Roy on a 19' douche canoe. In the course of one week I surfed a Point break- boca's, a reef brake- little hawaii, a rock break- Playa Negra, two river mouths - tamarindo and avellanas, and a hand full of beach breaks. We ate like kings, rented a brand new toyota land cruiser, and did all of the drugs hunter S thompson could dream of. Live a little.

He's a constant reminder to yourself to not get bitter and unhappy when you're old.

Imagine being mad about someone enjoying their life and going on a cool trip. F__ing weird and more than a little pathetic.

Where's the envy in my post? Life is short (as you know) so why trash someone for finding some joy surfing somewhere? I really don't get it.

Anyways, I've only been to Domincal and I liked it. Nice people, nice countryside, nice weather. No option on the rest but I do plan on going to Santa Teresa area next if I go back.

Barry your the only guy i know who doesnt like costa.

Sure some say its not as good as nica, or panama etc but noone straight vitriolically hates it on the same level you do.

Costa>puerto and much better than New Hampshire.

Although I spose its easy to hate it when you never left the resort.

You need to travel off the beaten path my friend, before your time runs out. I may be paying your social security but your generations gonna be taking that long paddle out to the afterlife or pumped full of meds in a nursing home in the next 5-10 years. Live a lil beforehand.

It is exactly because I DO NOT travel with the herd that CR is deficient. PR is where I grew up so it is a trip back to old stomping grounds for a few days, then Im out of there. But the surf is much better there than CR. I go to one other place every couple of years that I tell no one about, and that because NO ONE goes there to surf, but the waves are great when breaking. The advantage of being around long time.
I went to CR with good friends at their invitation. Is the place nice?? Sure. Had I fun? Yup; with friends. Spectacular? Not in my opinion. Surf quality.....meh, not better than here in NH (when it does finally break here)
Now, I was responding to the OP who wants to go there with 3 kids. What do morons respond with?? "The drugs are great!!" lol
I gave the OP a "non-herd" answer/opinion. There are vastly better places to take kids than CR, especially in January.

I really didn't like it that much either Gave it ago twice but nica was a great country. Costa has a crap ton of degenerates . There isn't many people on the coast in nica maybe Puerto Sandino but not much more than that.

I wasn't trashing anybody for surfing anywhere. Just for bragging about doing drugs.

Obviously you don't like the place Barry, PR and NH is where its at.
I warned them away from Puerto Viejo, even though it gets good surf, mostly because an over abundance of drugs.
I rented a car my first trip there, big deal.
I'm stoked for anyone who has a good time, and when I was younger I did party a bit, none the worse for wear.
But seriously, say no to drugs, and Costa Rica, and all the cool locals out there, and their waves. I'm sure they're getting sick of all the wedo's anyway. Pura Vida.

More to the point, I don't see it as a great surf destination. For fishing, TOPS. For eco-morons, TOPS. For yoga biatches, dumb.
Surfing, very average, sub par for my tastes. Why?? IT is all beach breaks. No reefs.
Crocs do not help--we are on their menu list, not so with sharks.

    no reefs: wrong

better point breaks than new hampshire and puerto (marias included)

better slabs, and the only wave heavier in puerto than salsa bravo is manglitas and thats debatable.

i guess puerto has tres palmas on costa but for big waves you might as well just head to HI

of course if you dont stay for a few months, poke down some two track jungle roads and most importantly stick around when a 8 foot plus south swell ripping out of the southern hemi is lighting up the pacific coast then you wouldn't know.

dude you need to stop being such a sheep and following the herd man! Week long vacations are for tourist, try 3 or 4 months.

I mean dude your retired, and your time is running out. Why you don't spend the entire summer in some remote Indonesian paradise baffles me.

Any place has better points than NH; it is not a surf destination. It barely breaks at all and it has NO reefs.
But as for reef breaks, there you are wrong. PR reef breaks were far superior than CRs, any day. First, they are real reefs, not slabs, not a bunch of stones, but reefs, coral reefs. Maria's is for chumps; as a reef break it is average. It is the reason I only stay THERE for only 4-5 days, to visit some friends. Other places that you do not know of, are far superior. There are a lot of other reefs your magazines do not know of, and hopefully, never will.

Two differences--the Pacific has longer swell periods, granted, but it also has a pronounced continental shelf. PR has shorter swell period (15 secs is rare) but as Hawaii is, it is volcanic in origin and protrudes up from the abyss; no continental shelf, so no loss of periodicity/strength from bottom dragging.
But reefs?? Mo' betta in ANY tropical island than continental shelf bound countries. It is science, the science of bathymetry, not just my opinion.

But....to each his own. You go your way, I'll go mine. Best of luck with what you find.
