When the spray actually stings a bit.

That's actually more or less how I call it. Sometimes I say the feet but usually waist - chest or whatever it is.

Maybe he was telling the truth at the time but by time you got there, conditions deteriorated? I can't tell you how many DP sessions are great, and just a couple hours later it's like night and day. It happens. In fact, it happens mid session.

    Oh gee thanks man!

Now for an actual response to the tread. I use the whole knee, thigh, waist, belly, shoulder, head, OH scale. No feets or foots needed. But I'm short. So if it's looking head high to me while riding, I'll say shoulder. If it's barley OH, I'll say HH.

I just found out the other day, I'm two inches shorter than I thought I was

That is no friend, and you should know better after the 2nd or 3rd time who is honest and who is not.
Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.

Stanks scale definitely made sense when I was out there, but like lbcrew I just use descriptive words as much as possible. Id say it's rare even for the people I surf with to give the same numbers here in cnj, but scaling it with words usually makes the most sense

Even the waist, head, over head thing gets skewed.
I was surfing last week in chest- shoulder with occ head high waves with some juice. A buddy of mine was riding a little groveller and it wasn't working for him.
I told him the board was holding him back, and he said it's only waist high.
I laughed at him and said OK Macho Man.

I remember in the early to mid nineties, before the internet, the Hawaii scale was popular, especially in Cali. "It's about 6 foot, or two foot Hawaiian", would be common.
When they measure the XXL awards they do it by the face. Some pics and vids I've seen don't seem that the wave jacks up as much as the bottom dropping out, Maybe it's Shipsterns I'm thinking of, I think in those cases measuring from the back might be a little misleading.

Then there's the heaviness factor, which now must be taken into consideration.

i measure by the face and the height based where i normally ride the wave ( you typically dont ride in the trough. So i may say its waist high (3 feet) to me when im up and riding and also say 6 foot faces.

I never understood people measuring a wave from the back. That is like measuring a double scoop ice cream by measuring the cone, it doesn't make sense. When that lip drops, its dropping from the top to the bottom of the face.

Quit measuring it and just surf it. Or not.

    Measuring is for d!cks. Literally.
