Donavin frankenriter was my favorite surfer growing up. That guy has style. I'm on a phone and can only post links for some reason. But the Tudor vs knost thing made me think of this. This guy has some moves man..... I'm telling you.. WATCH THIS.... http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xodo6iA2XGk

This is probably one of my favorite scenes from a surf movie for just pure style. Style to me is when someone can make it look effortless and also work as one with wave. This think Rasta does it perfectly here. I even searched for that board he was riding by formula surfboards or something. I think they are out of oz. I thought it looked like a fun shape even though I couldn't ride it like that. For power surfing, Taylor Knox is one of my favs.
For style I always loved watching Tom Curren from my era, and John John today. Style to me is taking what the wave has to offer, making the most of it, and making it look easy. If there's a barrel section coming, tuck in, a nice ramp, smack it, if you hit an open shoulder with speed crank that round house. Different days and spots offer different options. Some days it's all about the barrel, others I might be cranking cut backs left and right. As I get older I love drawing nice line in the pocket feeling the speed and power beneath my feet. When I was younger I would have tried something off the top in the critical part of the wave, and likely screwed up a beautiful wave, now I'm content to trim high on the face and save my speed for a big round house at the end. The opposite of style, the hop. Don't ever do this, just don't.
This scene is what made me love donavon growing up. It's also the reason I bought a shelter bonzer thanks to an awesome forum member https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=mviG8it6y8E And this is a classic. It's been posted so many times here but it just never gets old. So damn good. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=FngfrjGGLIM And one last one for any bonzer/knox lovers https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=H4z2XM48-iE
That Donavin vid has got to be Las Flores and Punta Mango. Ive surfed both those spots and its just what I remember. Anyone know where that was shot?
Let's see some introspection on this thread. None of us are the guys in the vids posted. What is style and foo as you see it in "your" surfing....
For me, if I can link some turns together smoothly and beat a couple sections I'm stoked. Everything extra is a bonus. I don't think about how I look, I just go as far as I can and milk the wave for what I can. Sometimes it works out, sometimes I don't quite accomplish what I wanted. Style? Dunno if I can call it that. Never seen myself surf, especially lately. Flow? It's hit or miss. I have my days. Good waves really help.
