I play guitar, took lessons in 1975 for 6 months. I'm not great or really talented but I can learn to play a half assed version of almost anything. My son took lessons for 5 years and is much better than me.

Mr Fountain was my idol years ago when I was a kid playing the clarinet. He still is. RIP, Pete...

Had the honor of seeing Pete Fountain at Jazz Fest one year, truly an inspiration. So it goes.

So I got the rest of my stuff delivered today. I was like a kid opening it all up and putting it together. I played a scale straight outta the box dudes. No sh*t. After 20+ years i'm stoked I can still play! And it sounded good too. Vibrato and everything. No songs yet, just played it for 30 seconds. Gonna really mess with it later, got some work to do still.

Sounds like fun. I had my old clarinet from 4th grade (1964) refurbished a few years back: new pads and cork, etc. Cost as much as the instrument did back in 64. It's amazing to me how much new instruments cost nowadays. Was looking for a soprano sax.
Still had almost all my old music books from six years of lessons. Started with a softer reed. Mouth was sore for awhile, but I was amazed how quickly it all came back to me: the fingering (old muscle memory from decades/scores past) reading music, etc. Much much easier than starting all over again.
Began playing the banjo about 10 years ago. Self taught. But when I haven't been playing for awhile, I have a difficult time picking it back up. Something about learning things when you're young. Both physical and mental, they're more ingrained and retained longer. Similar to the German I took years ago.

BTW, thanks. You've motivated be to resume playing. Maybe some Christmas songs to make the season bright!

You can get free sheet music on line to get you started.

That's awesome! Glad you're gonna get back to it. My mouth is sore today (insert joke here). I was able to play Silent Night, First Noel, and Stand By Me from memory, a little choppy at first and had to remember bits and pieces but it was slowly coming back to the point I played most of the song. My wife was pretty surprised, and so was I! Stoked, gonna try and get a few songs down for the family when they visit for Xmas / New Years. Lol

Man is my "embouchure" out of shape, hopefully won't take me long to get my muscle memory back.
Yeah dude, that's the goal, but i'm very far from being there, maybe by next Christmas, but i'll see what I can do. I might surprise myself, I know I can play parts of it, just not the whole thing.

Just played 80% of it a minute ago. Can't play for too long before I have to put it down, baby steps.

That's impressive that you remember how to play songs from way back. I have a hard time remembering songs i played a month ago. Granted, i figure it out quickly and know when i get it right, but it definitely takes some fiddling around on the fret board to remember the little diddies and variations that make a bass line more appealing and fun to play. Hell, i write a bass line, say to myself "oh that is groovy". Play it and play it to engrave it in my brain. Hum it all day. Never write it down. Then forget it and have to figure out what it was i was playing all over again. Luckily i have a good ear so i can hear my mistakes and quickly figure out the right notes

Yeah dude I'm shocked. But I picked up the sax very quickly my 1st time around so there is that. Like someone said earlier; it probably has to do with me learning at a young age. I know what you mean with forgetting stuff , I do that a lot with guitar.

Been playing the guitar for 25 years. Have several Electrics and two nice acoustics (Taylor and a Martin).

My f'ing bottom lip is raw, trying to fight through it and keep playing. It's slowly coming back to me though. It's been fun and frustrating at the same time. I have all these songs in my head from years ago that i'm dusting off in the memory banks, the lights are flickering but not fully on yet.

When began in the late 80's early 90's we didn't have internet to learn so I got a book of chords and learned them then jammed with others which really helped me progress. If you are a visual learner then video is great. I tend to get music from a Tablature site (ultimateguitartabs.com) is good, then I learn the song and play it my own way. About 5 years ago my band moved away from covers to mostly originals. At that point I got much deeper into Theory so I could write more interesting stuff. Here is part of my rig:

Nice man. I don't have guitars that nice, I have an Ibanez Performance Electric / Acoustic and an Ibanez Electric that my Dad gave me a while back. I could use a new guitar but I'm gonna hold off for a while and work on getting my sax skills back up to par. Then I'll probably want a better sax, but a guitar along the way would be nice too, along with new surfing borts, such expensive habits, f*ck. lol
