I just had an idea that I think would help this forum stay nice and Irie once everybody that was banned gets back to posting regularly.

My suggestion to Austin and the Mods would be to remove the "All Discussions" forum and just leave categories that we have to choose from to get to the threads.

Then, create a category for politics, and maybe a couple others for non-surf related discussion. There are categories right now, but nobody really uses them because of the All Discussions feature, which causes people to see thread topics that they may not be interested in.

If you have to physically click on the politics category, then you have willfully accepted the fact that there will political discussion in that "room" / forum.

Make sense? If you only care to talk about surfing related topics, then your favorite category will probably be the surfing one and you can ignore any other discussion going on in other parts of the forum this way.

Lastly, this would require Austin or the Mods to move threads to their proper locations. This would be more their task rather than policing for infractions. If someone posts a political thread in the surfing forum, then they (Austin & Mods) just simply need to move that thread to the politics forum, and let people go there to talk about it.

All in favor of removing the All Discussions forum and going with a categorized forum, please vote yes. Those who are opposed, vote no.

BTW, I don't even know if this is possible with the current c0cked up software they are using. I don't know how that would affect the website layout, or the app, so this may or may not even be possible until they change software / web design.

Also, i'm not saying i'm 100% for this idea. It's just an idea that popped in my head and I figured it was worth the discussion. I personally like how it is currently but others may not so voice your opinion here with a vote. If most of you tell me this is a bad idea I won't be offended, so be honest. Would this be good or bad for the forum?

Seems to me that everything is already divided and compartmentalized. Doing this thing again would mean that we would just be redundant.

Seems to me that the biggest problem is throwing politics into nonpolitical threads, etc.

This is been repeated ad nauseum but bears repeating again: if you don't like the subject, don't click on it.

Exactly. Keep the politics in the political treads.

I do get what DP is saying. I've never seen an internet forum where every tread is displayed in one place like it is here. But I think messing around with things will probably only muck it up even more. It seems that this place is unstable enough as it is and tossing another wrench in the works might not be the best idea at this time.

Fair enough, maybe something for the next site build.

It's a good idea DP, but i dont like it. I look at a few other forums from time to time. All set up the way you described, and i don't like it. It's not that i don't like it actually. But all those forums are different. Waaaaay more members and way more topics to discuss. This place is strange. In a good way. I don't take part in the political threads, but I'll pop in there to see what's going on. Who's beefing with who. I read a few threads i dint have any interest in just to see what's going on, because as we all know our threads never stay on track. Sometimes those golden SI moments come in threads your not interested in. Like iggys eat my f*ck. No idea what thread that was in, but i found it hilarious and it could of happened in any thread. So i for one like that everything is jumbled together, it works for this place. Also with us being a bunch of misfits and rejects and people who refuse to "fall in line", no one would respect the different "rooms".

This is the only forum i participate in, though i look at a few others. Iv never seen a forum like this. It's so disfunctional yet i wouldn't have it any other way.

Another example....you all have heard how i bought that bonzer of a awesome guy on here. I wasn't in the market for a new board, the title of the thread had the word bonzer in it and drew me in. And i ended up getting it. If we had different sections that would be in a "for sale" section that i never would of clicked on because i wasn't actively looking to buy. Live4truth just sold a few sets of fins i was interested in to fund his libs. Granted i didn't buy them because money was tight. But had money not been right i would of. Or if he didn't sell them all i would know who to go to when money was right. Again, i wouldn't of gone to the for sale section and seen any of that because i was not looking to buy. Just happened to come across it. You can get good deals on the perfect board or fins on here randomly out of the blue. But if your not actively looking to buy, you wouldn't click on the for sale section.

Back in the days the forum was segregated by geographical locations. Mid-Atlantic, northeast, southeast, Florida, Caribbean, west cost, etc. It was less good.

The easiest way to destroy something is divide it into oblivion. I've seen boards completely implode when the discussions were broken down into subgroups. Look at what happened to the democrats, they banked on holding their loose coalition together by pandering to each subset separately. All that did was show how little each had in common with the others and one defection causes the whole house of cards to collapse. The only thing keeping this lame set up going is that everything is smooshed together forcing interaction.

I don't know DP...a thread is a thread. The dis functionality makes this place unique. Good thoughts though.

with the degree of content, all we would have to do is split it into a 'what' and a 'how' section

    what wesuite
    what surbort
    what presidente
    what state EC only

    How to sand reconne
how to sleep with blasters sister
how to complaine about the post above yours
how to wear a tinfoil hatte
    how to repair surfbort
how do i get my wetsuite off
    how to swim
    how to surf
    how to duckdive
    how to change a fin
    how to tie my shoes
how to not look like a kook

It is not a bad thing to put ideas out there. Without them, we would be living in caves and dragging our women around by the hair.....

We're a dysfunctional bunch of "misfits and rejects"?? I resemble that remark!

DP: Not sure if categorizing and segregating topics will address the issue you're wanting to resolve. It's more a personnel issue.
I sort of like the one-stop "smorgasbord" we have now.

I agree. there are about 2 dozen regular posters on here, and forum interaction itself (i.e. who on the forumme is doing what and to whom) is about 60% of the content to begin with.

Start dividing that up, and you get like three responses to a tread per day. Do the math.

Yeah it's probably not a good idea to section everything off. A big part of coming to this board is interacting with all the fun people, not necessarily trying to find specific information. But good for you for trying to come up with some new ideas. A famous person once said, "the only good way to have a great idea is to have a lot of ideas. Most ideas won't be very good but it's a necessary part of coming up with a great idea", or something like that merry Christmas to you!
