I'm looking at heading down here at the end of the month for a race and hopefully surfing. I'm aiming to go south this time at the inlet, but i have surfed by the sunset pier the last time i ventured thru. if you guys know of some specific breaks in Daytona beach nearby, i'd like to know about em. But my main question is should i figure out where i'm staying once i get to Daytona or book in advance? I always think of Daytona as our Myrtle Beach and during the winter you just pick some sht oceanfront hotel and fork over the $60/night or less. Checking the travel websites, they are getting booked up for some reason that wknd - not sure if something else if going down that wknd that i don't know about. Could be more popular of a race than i have been assuming
Did you mean Sunglow pier? That and Ponce Inlet are the two best bets in that area, otherwise, Flagler Pier to the North or New Smryna further south would be next best options depending on swell / wind direction. I have tried a few other spots like the Daytona Pier and areas nearby and it wasn't that good, but could have just been bad conditions to begin with.
Book in advance with a place offering 24 hour cancellation; then, you can move, if you do not like it.
What race you going to? My pops always heads down there for races. He always asks if i want to go but i always pass. Although i never thought of surfing while there. I may have to go next time. Anyway which race is it? My pops may be there. I caught the tail end of black bike week which I thought was hilarious, literally was like the last day. Rolex 24 is the race which by the title may guess it's a 24 hr race. I used to go to Petit Le Mans a good bit when I was young, similar to that racing. You can go in and out, bring a cooler, so I got time to venture here and there like New Smyrna but set up a beach base. Sunglow was a slow rolling break,n the Daytona pier surprisingly sucks.I'll check some free cancellation hotels. And don't boast about it, but I learned how to surf in Daytona as a grom
LOLOL...those cars!!!!!!!!!!! While I have not gone in a while, the races can be fun. A fellow photographer for one of the newspapers tries to get me to shoot some of them with him, but I pass. I do not typically like to mix with a hoard of tourists, whether it be this country or another one. I really hope that you enjoy your visit.
I haven't surfed Daytona area in like a zillion years or something. Spent Summers in Ormond Beach as a child. Sunglow Pier was a decent spot way back in the day, like 1987 or 1988 haha. My grandparents had a house there and lived there in their twilight years. Then my uncle lived there in his last few years and when he died, I was going to buy out the family for it but they sold and I got a decent amount of money out of it back in 2007. Wouldn't have minded at the time if I had gotten it and moved down there for good, but hopefully it's never something I regret in future years. Enjoy your time there though! I think places like New Smyrna and Ponce Inlet are definitely better. But as many will warn you, it's pretty sharky at New Smyrna/Ponce, or at least it's notorious for the sharks.
North Side of Ponce Inlet not as Sharky as South Side; New Smyrna known for more shark bites than any other beach in Fla due to fishing industry inside the Ponce Inlet, they like feeding on the fish scraps. The closer you are to the South Side Jetty don't wiggle your toes.
