I'm guessing you're renting a 4x4 so you can drive on the beach. That's cool because you might be able to access many more places than you otherwise could. Not sure if you know but you do need a permit in order to do so: https://www.nps.gov/caha/planyourvisit/beachactivities.htm#ORV and https://www.recreation.gov/permits/...o?page=details&contractCode=NRSO&parkId=70853 Don't try to go without a permit cuz the NPS rangers can and will be d!cks. You are not allowed to drive everywhere within CHNS and some areas are subject to seasonal closure due to "resource management" IOW nesting birds and turtles and shiit. You should also be aware that driving on the beach up there is not at all like driving on the hard packed beaches of Florida. The sand is often soft and deep. It is quite possible to get stuck. Most important thing to do is air down your tires for a larger footprint. It is usually best to drive in existing tracks. Make sure you have a jack and shovel as required by the permit. There's a lot of cool places to explore with an ORV up there. You can often find places with no other humans in sight. If it's not closed for "resource management" you should visit The Point (Cape Point) where the Gulfstream meets The Labradors. Even if it's closed to ORVs you can probably get there by walking (long) like I've done last few times there. One of my favorite places in the world.
Thanks for the tips dude. I saw that on one of their website so I'll probably do that. I don't know if i'll be driving on the beach, but I figured get the 4x4 just in case.
Ho Lee Fvck you crackers! Just got back from Puerto Rico and it was the best trip I have taken in years!!! Flew into San Juan wednesday, and did the city thing with the wife (left the kids at home with my mother in law). Up early thurs morning and check the report for Rincon. DOH plus on the sets. Get the rental loaded up and hit the road. Check in the B&B where we were staying and headed to Marias. Take my mini-gun (6'10" pin tail) and paddle out. After about 30 minutes, I say eff this and paddle straight to the point. Me, one other surfer and three pr boogy boarders are there (on a quick aside, I found puerto ricans to be super nice and friendly, until they hit the water. Then they turned into greedy wave hogging bastards). There were so many waves that I started getting into some of the better set waves. Caught three solid 12 -13 foot faces that held open for about 50 yards. Fvcking amazing. Friday was head high and clean, ended up surfing indicators, domes and Marias all day. Sat morn was "flat" till I heard Domes was chest shoulder high - went out and surfed Chest high indicators all afternoon. Sunday was head high to overhead and clean, surfed marias all day again. The whole time we were there, wife was knocking back rum punches, so she was happy. Ate some great food, kept the wife happy, and surfed my brains out. Never got below chest high the four full days we were there. Wish it could have been longer, but we could only leave the kids for so long with the in-laws. Can't wait to go back and surf all the other breaks I wasn't able to. Was slightly hobbled by my wife wanted to be able to sit at calypso's and drink, which kept me around Marias more than I wanted, but who give's a sh!t - I got to surf 82 degree water in February while it was flat and 42 degrees back home.
I was going to start a thread but maybe I can get some feedback here from you shredders. I am planning a trip to Hawaii this winter....bring in the new year and then stay for part of January. Probably a 2-3 week trip. I have a buddy who lives in San Diego that I have not seen in years and he surfs and lives in the heart of San Diego. I have been to CA surfing a number of times but only from Newport Beach and North. I have been looking to visit San Diego since I have never been. I am not sure I want to give up (say 3-5 days) that I would otherwise spend in Hawaii. You guys think San Diego (for one who has never been) is worth it? I am leaning towards not going to SD but was wondering what some of you who have been might think. Gracias!
Id say no Jay D, as then you will have to bring a wetsuit as well? just a thought just my 2 cents deffo hmu when you get here and matt in vb, nice, SCORING
Born and raised SD. Send me a PM and I can point you in the right direction from IB to Trestles. IMHO, Gaff is worth taking to because he's still there. Anybody that charges LJ reefs is gonna be knowledgeable and has my respect. Wourde. Have fun, SD is a great place with great waves.
I did not even get that far....good point on the suit. So...3/2 no boots and gloves in January??? Kidde, I did not know you grew up there. I assume my buddy has the place wired...really don't know until I get there but he sounds like he does. I guess I am torn on the known entity (Hawaiian inner island euphoria) versus the unknown (sunny San Diego with super crowded waves). Although the island Euphoria can have it's own issues I guess...especially some crowded sessions. Also, sounds like you can score not so crowded SD reefs if you are on it...which I tend to be (dawn patrols and the like)!!!
can you wait to make a choice until you see the surf report? Also, a 3/2 if its new should be good? but maybe some 3mm boots? I spent February 2011 there and dawn patrols were chilly
My next surf trip is not a surf trip. We are going to France- Paris and Provence for 10 days. Celebrating life. I think I might be done with them; maybe one more if my daughter wants to go to PR with our grand daughter. Surf culture has changed too much, replete with hostile losers.
Aloha Barry, this is a surf trip thread. Your post is relevant how? must be a moron JD gotcha. If youve never been I reckon go, it is a neat boisterous corner of the surf world
You won't be trunking SD until July...spring suit around April. And there are still plenty of relatively uncrowded waves. Bring your passport and you'll have access to uncrowded grinders about 15 minutes due South
iv always wanted to do a baja road trip, but the Mexican violence is threat is real.the further ur away from the border the safer u are, like Puerto rarely has any problems other than some thieving.them cartels tho got me shook lol, even tho guys been doing it since the 60s I just don't feel safe. would love to go to Portugal but the water temps are the same here and if u want to score there u have to go in winter.not really a summer retreat, but id imagine its well worth it
