Thank you very much, Lancelot, lol... This is an informative, recent article by Surfing: http://www.surfingmagazine.com/originals/what-can-a-surfer-do-if-they-see-someone-drowning/ I believe I will post the link elsewhere, as well.
yup surfing mag is dead and gone transworld surf was always my favorite,2nd would be surfing mag.surfer mag sucks, always did always will. just the way it goes, why publish a mag if u can see the pics 2 months before the issue is out.every swell around the world is heavily documented,u can see pics and video the same day from multiple sources.mags cant keep up.im surprised the newspaper didn't go out of business
I like magazines, books, etc. As for what you reference, the magazines must always evolve, and exclusives are one means of doing so; however, they benefit by having a strong web presence.
I do not always like a beam of light in my face, bad for the eyes, nor to always be connected to the grid...
Print surf media, especially the surf porn quality we like to view, needs to adapt. They have text codes and stuff that can be embedded in ads, attached to social media platforms, and augmented by mass emails with landing pages. Until value is added so the sponsors get bang for the buck equal or better than digital promotions, it will die. Branding is great if you are Coca Cola. Too expensive if you are Channel Island or a local surf shop, God help them. Surfline keeps me up to date with lousy predictions, great video, and up to date newsfeeds. I haven't bought a surf mag in years.
I have a surfer subscription. Think i used to have surfing too. I usually get them, flip through them and look at the pictures are read the article titles. Once in a blue moon a article will catch my eye and I'll read it. Usually it just gets thrown in a big ol box. I have boxes upon boxes of these mags. Don't know why i keep them, but i do
Me too, I have bins full of old vintage surf mags, kind of like my grandparents had stacks of National Geographic in the garage and I used to look at photos of naked Ubangi women as a preteen. It would have been lots better if Gramps had old surf mags instead, the wahines look much mo bettah.
They should increase in collector value, some more than others, as with all things. You may wish to consider neutralizing some of the impurities and harmful acids; at least, on the specific ones that you truly wish to preserve, and then ensure that you have properly stored them. You can find information on the web regarding what you can do yourself, as well as sending some out to the professionals: http://www.archivalmethods.com/blog/conservators/#nomobile
Good riddance. I received a subscription for Christmas about 5 years ago and hated it. Open up the mag and out drop 5 or 6 subscription slips. There were at least 5 others stuck in there in every issue. 2 thirds of the magazine is advertising for products I'll never use. When the subscription ran out they kept coming at me with special offers to stay signed up, I ignored all of them. For the next 2 years they sent it to me anyhow and I threw each issue in the recycling without even looking.
Wishing Mr. Morton, the St. Augustine man, well with his future ventures:
I don't know. This Mag is older than all of us (Barry excluded). Commercialization of publications and the subsequent internet phenom explosion cursed all that was good. Buuuuttttt, there was a time(including decades) for me where surf mags where the Shizuoka.
With all due respect, not everyone states his or her age upon this forum, nor other things... As for the commercialization, I know of another niche sport that has been battling with the same dilemma having faced all surfers, once upon a time, regarding whether to go full-tilt in sharing the passion and enormous skill over accomplishments, or to keep all a closed knit circle of a secret from the rest of the world. It is one that I have cross-trained in, myself, and I can easily empathize with all [edit: most are neutral, or simply refrain from voicing opinion] sides. It is natural to want to share the love, positive vibes, encourage others to experience, and at the same time, it can be tempting to be selfish with all, realizing that it can be spoiled...catch 22, for some, while not for others. The magazine had an outstanding run.
Sometimes, when I discipline them, but they quickly get over it (I have more than one), same with my dogs.
