Hope all is going well for the swellinformed masses,

on the 14th im headed to Peru for 6 weeks and i would appreciate any info from those who have done a similar experience themselves.

For the first ten days I want to focus on breaks around Lima or within a days travel of bus from Lima. Any specifics on easy access breaks and dirtrat cheap places to stay (that are safe) would be much appreciated.

After that I will be focusing on Incan ruins inland with my gal pal (non surf oriented portion) inland in Cuzco and Machu Picchu

After a week or two of that Ill be back on the dusty grind looking to head points north to Chicama and other spots.

Any surf related stories, advice, contacts, places to stay, things to avoid etc or private messages pertaining to all that would be much appreciated.

I will repay the favor by using this post as a place to post pictures and stories of my trip in real time when appropriate. Thanks!

    -Trev

Rent a car, use google maps, download offline map on google maps, look for surf breaks.

    Bring and wear condoms.

South of Lima aboot an hour or so is a town Punta Hermosa. At least 5 breaks all within walking distance, best being right in center of town called La Isla. Punchy right. It's been 20 years since I been there so no tips on a play to stay.
    Have a blast!

You probably already know, but there are literally dozens of hostels at most of those left points you are visiting. I "drove" around those points on Google Earth, and was amazed at the number of decent looking hostels at the points.

It's also amazing how much of the Peruvian coastline you can drive on with Google Earth. I can drive on more streets in El Peru than I can on the Strait.

Google Earth must be administered by surfers.

I did the same trip you are doing but In June July. The beachbreaks in Lima are actually kind of fun but there are serious urchins there too. I didn't love Hermosa as it was cold and soooo fogged out...Never saw the sun there and we stayed there for 5 days....the waves were OK...the town was a ghost town but go to any beach town in the States iin the winter and what will you see? Nothing. Should be better this time of year. We scored Chicama insanely good for three days....it's only really good when there is a south swell PUMPING...then chicama will be chest to 2 foot overhead and reeling. Unfortunately, people have told me the break is littered with zodiacs these days making it crowded. Huanchaco is a really cool town south of Chicama that always has a wave so you can chill and surf there until a swell hits then go to Chicaama. My fav place in Peru is lobitos ....board shorts, a hanful of spots around, etc....when I was there you had to knock on doors and ask somebody to stay since there was no hotel anywhere but I kknow that is not the case anymore. Pacasmayo is another long left that never gets crowded and is actually longer than Chicama. Mancora is a fun party town w lots of tail!!!! If you luck into a real NW swell the North of the country is where you want to be ...like Cabo Blanco etc.....those waves get really really good. .......Machu Piccu is really cool. Check out ollantaytambo on the way up.....great ruins and cool little town. Cheers have fun ...don't eat/eat the cui

    Peru always has waves.
Haven't been there in 20 years but stayed at pico alto surf camp which, apparently, is still open. It was great.

    https://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_R...Alto_Surf_Camp-Punta_Hermosa_Lima_Region.html

One experience sums up my trip- epic wave came to me at Seniorita's and there was a local in better position. I asked if he was going. He replied "you go - you are a guest here."
    I got an incredible barrel.

When I was there you really had to watch your stuff. My local guide from the camp "Pulpo" had some stuff ripped off. (I did not.)

20 year old info but great trip.
    You will get great waves.

dude i just booked my airport hotel for the night i fly in (cause i land in lima past midnight and dont wanna walk a few blocks after being jetlagged, the barrios around the airport seem sketch and id be gringoing around with my backpack, alone, at 2 in the morning no bueno) and my plane ticket from lima to cusco.

Starting to make moves! things are coming together. IM ****ING PUMPED. now i just need to find the cheapo beachfront accomodations that are safe. Im finding whole apartments walking distance to La Herradurra and other breaks in lima for less than 20 bucks a night. WHOLE APARTMENTS, fully furnished like luxury and in safe neighborhoods.:

second ones a little far but not if i rent a bike or go for a run

Its like dirt rat prices in america get you 4 star in peru. Seems like costa rica without the gringo inflation.

This is going back 20 years, but I tried, I mean really tried to spend all my money, and couldn't do it.
Yeah it's cheap there. One thing that struck me was driving North to some points, and passing by whole sides of mountains covered in corrugated aluminum, cardboard, pallet cities. Really poor there, and most of the coast looks like the moon, hence no gringo invasion.

    Sup homies,

well im here and its pretty sweet.

Havent [scored] yet but its been consistently head high and fun around Miraflores at all the beginner breaks.

Its been fun to just kick back and relax in the sunshine, eat mad good international food for mucho cheapo, and get my gringo sunburn and espanol back. Ive been getting two a day sessions at pampilla (a beginner break in Miraflores) and been renting yellow dinged up boards of all shapes and sizes from my homie two time peruvian champion Doc Garcia who i was introduced to from a mutual contact for 15 soles (around five bucks) a day.

Honestly, after being such a wave monkey on surf patrol in the Pacific Northwest for so long i have been totally content to spend these past few jetlagged days not caring about timing the tides or swell or wind etc and just heading to the beach when i damn well please to score a few nuggets here and there. Peru is what surfing should be.

that being said, I AM still here to score. Tommorrow i will be gringoing down to punta hermosa where there are some ollas bueno i hope. The forcast is small, but im taking my time acclimating as i will be here for another 6 weeks minimum and am not rushing anything. I havent dialed in a good board to purchase yet but I found a couple pretty much brand new ones between $100-200 that fit what im looking for (thruster, between 6 feet and 7 feet, a good all-rounder if neccesary but something that can handle a double overhead barrel as well).

The true scorey part of my trip (i hope if my peruvian wave karma is good) will begin after i return from machu picchu at the begining of march. Thats when ill head up to chicama, lobitos, mancora, etc. Its been a hell of a time and ive only been here three days. My phone plan makes me pay per photo so its gonna have to be a photo dump once i get back to the states on here, but until then hopefully i can keep you swellinformed masses entertained (or at least not annoyed) with some textual blog posts and such.

    Hope yer scoring,

    -.trev
