I'm way over due for a surf trip or a vacation of any kind for that matter. Got some real trips planned but am going to have to wait till fall due to life. With that being said, I'm going to do a fri-mon type weekend getaway. Me and the lady enjoy taking quick getaways and the option to surf is a must. Not a dedicated surf trip but i always bring a board or two and if there's waves i go. Iv done OBX allot although it's been about 3 years. I know the area well. Done Boston and found some nice places to drink and eat thanks to Emass. Been to RI but only as a day trip to surf. I'm thinking of doing RI or maybe Maine. Not sure. Want opinions. Good food, good bars, breweries, and aquariums, near workable surf spots. I got some ideas but figured I'd get some opinions from you dudes. If you were me, where'd you go?
I live in central LI. Babylon village. I usually surf anywhere from central LI to LB. Surprisingly i never made it out east, at least not on the south shore to surf. So that would be another trip option i suppose
Heh. This is the first time I've heard of anyone coming up to RI for a surf trip. I'm actually curious to see what you come up with. If you're driving, I'd maybe try Indian River Inlet or even OCMD. If flying, Florida isn't a bad call; DPSUP and Betty always seem to be getting some down there.
^^^ (metards post) soulsurfer and I were about to drive 16 hours to get them waves today, but he bailed on me. Just look at this: I think that's from somewhere in that vicinity. I've never been, but that photo is encouraging. Not sure when you are planning to go but I assume this upcoming fed holiday. I'm trying to take a mini trip myself. Preferably somewhere warm. Sometimes, if you look in advance, tickets to Cali can be relatively inexpensive. I've gotten round trip flights for pretty cheap. Considering an extended weekend stay there sometime soon.
Take a look at the outer beaches of Cape Cod. Lots of b and b's, great eats, bars, no aquarium but lots of Atlantic Ocean. The beaches can be desolate with not many surfers but not lacking in quality breaks. Takes a little bravado to paddle 100 yards through the trough to get out but there are countless unridden waves if that's what you seek. I recommend taking a surf buddy and your girls of course, but its a must for any ECer, or at least to check it off the bucket list of spots to go. Or you can go to NH and find Barry Cuda
I've been up to Cape Cod twice and really enjoyed it. That's a great idea for a surf trip, provided you're ok with the cold. Both times I went up there I had the entire beach to myself. And this is at a named, popular spot, not some secret spot. Lots of seals. Both times the surf was head high or so. I imagine it is pretty intense once it gets overhead there.
I was actually seriously considering FL...problem is its far from NY for a quick getaway. If im getting on a plane, I'm going all out. Like i said, i got legit trips planned. Just got to wait a bit on them till after summer. This trip is just to gateway to hold me over. And toonces...i hear ya. Sounds weird right? But just like when you go out of the country, i enjoy finding and surfing diffrent spots iv never been to. Even if it's just on the EC. Iv made day trips up to RI on bigger swells to surf....I'm sure everyone here knows where i went. Even if it's waist high, i enjoy surfing diffrent spots away from home. Iv been south quite a bit. Up north iv never done much exploring. So that's why i was thinking RI or Maine. Looks like some cool spots to go exploring and find somthing diffrent. Keep in mind, I'm not naive. I'm not expecting to score some epic waves. But if there's a little swell, I'm going exploring. If there's no swell, then me and the lady just find some good watering holes.
And id be going probably march. Slightly warmer weather but before the summer tourist crowds. Although being from NY, I'm not afraid of cold water/weather. That's not a concern of mine
Nice man. That's exactly what I'm looking for. Going to have to look into that. Thanks for the input.
Cool. I'm curious to see where you end up going. I almost headed down to LI over Xmas but ended up driving up to Cape Cod. Both times I hit a spot just north of Coast Guard beach, N-something Light. Nobody at all out there, but even if there was, there's plenty of beach to spread out. Not sure where you stay up there, but I'm sure Google will sort that out.
After some quick Google maps "driving", that's exactly the area i was looking. Toonces, what's the drive like to Cape cod from where your at. Just curious because it seems close enough that if i were to head to CC but conditions/wind warranted heading to RI, it's doable. Or vice versa.
Mon, the drive is quick from where you at, 3-5 hrs tops, depending on Hartford traffic. That time of year you will have predominate winds from the southerly direction and guaranteed fog depending on the tide and wind direction. If you get knocked out of surf, it's no great loss because you will still have a great weekend that's close to home.
C'mon down dude. I actually just got back from surfing with Yankee and his GF who decided to come down for the weekend. I would be glad help you score if there are waves to be found.
If you've never been east go to Mtk... if you're just gonna do fri to mon that would be my suggestion... I go all the time when I get a couple of feee days. No sense spending have the weekend driving when you have an awesome place you've never surfed right in your backyard.
I'm gonna come thru there soon dp. When I do I'm gonna hit you up so you can show me the goods. Where abouts are you located down there?
