divorced over surfing!

Surfing can often be a source of contention with my fiancee and I. Weekend surfs can really drive a wedge between us. Especially when she wants to go do "fun stuff". It ruins the day and our flow. Dawn patrol sessions during the week are rarely ever an issue. When the waves are good and more than 2 or 3 mornings have been spent surfing, she can be annoyed. Another unfortunate drawback of the surf life is that if I surfed a lot lately or that day, she can expect more often than not I will absolutely not be able to keep my eyes open an hour past dinner. You could tape them ****s open and I will still be sawing logs. she hates that

 

Why would you sign up for a financial commitment to this?

My 2 centavos, not that you asked: either you'll be out of the water forever within 8 months of signing that marriage license (financial doc) or the divorce will be pending inside of of 24 mos from date of sig on that doc.

Life as you know it changes majorly, perhaps suddenly, perhaps gradually, but always, always majorly once you have signed on the line that is dotted.

 

Haha this cracks me up... I deal with this all the time. 5 years just got engaged but before I popped the question I bought a new FireWire and after I got new wetsuit. Just gotta put something nice for her inbetween lol.

 

For the dudes that have ladies that don't bother you about surfing....anyone have a lady who is impressed with your surfing. Maybe not impressed. But admires your dedication?

My lady's parents have obviously known me a long time. Know i surf. Know i surf year round. Yet i still get the "what? You went surfing in a blizzard!?" Type of remarks. How cold is it blah blah blah. You woke up at 5 on a Saturday to surf blah blah. Any way. The lady always comments somthing like "could you imagine loving somthing that much". She digs the dedication and digs the fact that I'll put myself in uncomfortable situations (not much sleep or just could northern winter conditions) just to score a few

 

I think its funny people who say your nuts surfing in the winter...I always respond, "Believe it or not, Iam as warm as you are walking outside in winter jackets". IMO, its not extreme surfing in the winter, in fact its not any different then the summer except all the chit on and duck diving more then a couple times paddling out can cause your face to freeze up... sure there definitely exceptions - big hollow and stiff cold NW winds...but the last few times I have been out, during the winter, chest high on sets and I was burning up. Definitely exceptions...but I always try to tell people, Iam as warm if not warmer then you are sitting on the beach. It really isnt crazy...sometimes I wish I could throw a suit on someone just so they know what it feels like.

 

Your right and i agree. But not always. Most winter days are fine. But it can get bad. There are days when I'm flat out freezing. When it's in the single to negative digits with wind chill...your not warm. But ofcourse that's not everyday

 

definitely exceptions. I remember one day, stiff offshores, upper teens and easy overhead and a few out...I remember it because I remained on the beach watching or in the car with the heater blasting and music playing. That was an extreme day.

 

This is one of the weirder threads i have read on here, and i say that bc im about to give you a recommendation for a jewler.

I got myself a good one. She knows that we need our own hobbies. I run a surf travel business in the winter out of Nicaragua and she stays here in NE most of the time. Without the ocean (surfing and fishing) i get quite miserable. Finding a balance is key. Im glad tath she likes the beach and not surfing. I dont think i could stand to wait for her to be ready at 5am when its firing, it never worked out well in college on powder days, i often left her behind to drive to the mtn herself....

How she like the metal detector? I was thinking of doing that for my lady too. Although she enjoys taking pictures. Just somthing else for her to do while i surf besides throwing small rocks at bigger rocks for the crystals inside. I taught her that one and she enjoys it waaaay to much. Plus her aim isn't good

 

Been with my wife 25+ years. When she married me she knew who i was. She knows i go surfing whenever i want to. We are not attached at the hip. I have a million surfboards and wetsuits. She doesn't care. She trusts me. She is actually on the beach while i surf maybe a few times a year. Ours is a marriage.

My friend rips. Totally. Best surfer i know. Meets girl gets married only allowed to surf when she says so. Misses a lot of swell. Constant fight for 20 years.. All he lives for is surfing.

Other friend just gotinto the grogscam njhall of fame. Totally rips. His wife even worse.

Both blow me out of the water.

In my experience, moving closer to the beach made our marriage better. Living inland made the act of going surfing a project ever time I wanted to go. 45 minutes - hr to the Gulf, 2hrs to the East Coast, it was an event every single time. With my dedication I blew off those obstacles as no big deal and managed to get out weekly if not multiple times per week despite our location but it can cause some issues from time to time when there's so much that goes into a surf session that it takes away from family time.

Now, living 15 minutes away, i'm able to get my water time in without it cutting into anything else so I get my fix and everybody is happy. So my advise to anybody who is having trouble in this area, move to the beach or within 30 minutes to the water, it changes things for the better, at least it did for us.
