Hey all. What are you guys using? Does anyone still make dedicated surf racks? I need a set for my 2006 Mazda 3. Thanks.
thule & yakima are most popular. i just bought some generic ones on Ebay - Street Tune i think- for about $55. that's compared to $300 from those two mentioned. if they suck, i'll let ya know tho. but softracks, yeah there are surf ones dedicated to those
I have a Yakima set (Q Towers and Round Bars). If you really plan to do any traveling with it, they have an accessory called the SUP Dawg that will hold a SUP or surfboards really well.
wtf is a dedicated surf rack? a standard roof rack with $.33 pipe insulation??? I sell thule and yakima at my store and people are always suprised to here me tell them you can use rope and towels to hold a surfboard on the roof. then I sell them 35 dollar rack pads.
Like the old school racks that had a bungee or strap from the center and a way to fasten or clamp them down built in. No need for padding IMHO..
yeah i remember them. Im sure they stopped making them because of that whole DIY idea that also allowed you to use your rack for other shat.
Might try a Mazda dealer as a last resort. They'll order and install but you may pay at least 1 1/2 times as much. My son recently bought a 2013 Mazda 3 and negotiated a set of racks as part of the deal. They're Thule racks but with Mazda labeling. I did same in Jan for my 2016 KIA Soul. Then bought pair of Dorsal pads and straps (really only need one strap to tie down board) off Amazon.
I have racks on my f-350 for ladders, as I used to use it as a work truck back when I was running my own business. You don't usually need a rack on a truck for surf bort's though, unless you have a terribly short bed and it's a big ass log in there. I put a bort on top of a Scion XB, when I was borrowing one from a friend. I let him use my truck for work, and we swapped vehicles for a few days one time. Another buddy of mine had an XB and a truck, but had to use the XB to go surfing when his truck was out of commission. I did what he told me to do. Tied them to the roof from the inside of the car. I bet it was redneck looking as ****! Back in the day, I put a couple bort's in the back of my 93 hatchback Mustang. Folded the seats down in the back and had them hanging out the window with the hatch bungee'd open. Drive down all the way from Bergen County to Manasquan Inlet like that, back in April/May of 2001, when we had that ridiculous span of 90+ degree highs and some pretty decent swells. Did it on weeknights after work, it was pretty sweet. Even took off early a few times. I'm surprised it took that many posts before someone brought up that kind of a rack! Nah, they're fake! Not me, I'd still do unforgivable things to them. Provided the face looked good!
