Started my next project. I'm going to a repair lots of dings and delams on my 6'10" WRV FunFish. I'll post a pic later. It has more damage than I recall, but it gives me something to do, and I'm beginning to enjoy the work, which is calming to me. Is that weird?
Uh oh... here he goes. Brother... you're just beginning to get the bug. Next thing you know your garage will be full of foam dust, and all your sneakers will be encrusted by a Jimi Hendrix acid swirl of soul drippings.
Not weird at all my friend. For me, what started as a necessity when I was poor(er) has become a rewarding hobby. I'm going to post a few pics of some of my other projects. Lets keep this thread alive!
Lol Yeah dude, it's getting more enjoyable the better I get. It's addicting once I put the sand paper in motion. Right on dude, looking forward to the pics.
Here's what has been nicknamed "The Blue Bomber". The deck isn't in too bad of shape other than little dents all over. This bort is a poly hand shaped by Mike Daniel. Very fragile compared to the Coils. I've had this one for about 12 years I think? The bottom is in terrible shape, I did a couple ding repairs very sloppy about 10 years ago using a poly Ding All repair kit. I used way too much cloth, didn't sand it properly, and now that i'm getting the hang of this i'm going to clean it up along with the various little holes I have already sanded up for repair. I think what happened is it was sitting in sand and someone sat or stood on it and the shells punctured it. There are some soft delam spots that I will probably have to cut open and fill with Q-Cell resin and then close it back up and put a layer of cloth over and sand down. Or something like that lol. Also there is is cracking along the swallow tail so I'll be wrapping those rails with cloth most likely, make sure it's completely water tight and get her back out there. I'm not going for perfection as it's an old bort and will be using epoxy on a poly bort after using poly the 1st time and hated it.
1st coat on all the little puncture wounds is about dry, there was 8 of em I believe, and then I also tried cleaning up the two disastrous repairs from 10 years ago by sanding down and putting an epoxy hot coat over the initial poly repair. Should be completely dry this afternoon and ready for sanding. Still got lots of work to do.
I used epoxy Suncure to fill the hole, dried in 5-10 minutes, then I sanded down some to prep for wrapping the rails on the tail with cloth and a coat of resin. Maybe tonight or tomorrow.
One you wrap the rail with cloth, and you go to do your hotcoat, you know how to get that hard edge back? Create a lip of tape that leaves a bead of resin around the edge that you can shape with a block.
Here's a little further explanation. I copied this from Greenlight Surf Supply website: (after you have hotcoated the top, and you are taping the tail for your bottom hotcoat) ...taper your tape up toward the tail, and actually have the top of the tape a few millimeters above the level of the tail area. This will act as the dam to catch and collect resin in this critical area. Finally, make sure your board is as level as possible to promote an evenly distributed flow of the resin when it settles on your board. https://greenlightsurfsupply.com/pages/greenlight-surfboard-building-guide-page-3 To access that page you need to register on their website.
