Did these guys blow it with Stella? I'd hate to see the 2nd year of competition and again sub-par pits.
Seriously, would you miss out on chasing a swell like that to sit around waiting for your next heat? While the concept is admirable it just isn't very practical. April is usually good for one solid swell.
I was wondering the same thing?? Didn't Jersey basic go off right in the begininng of the Cold War waiting period?
Yeah they missed 3 opportunities for good to epic waves in asbury. The big storm didn't clean up till 3pm for us. Last weekend was shoulder to head and clean east swell. Alot of current in the morning but it cleaned up nice by 11.
well there was an alleged "blizzard" and state of emergency, waves only got good at the end of the day. would've been awesome if they did do it on stella,we will not see another swell like that during the waiting period. i went to last years thing,i stayed for like 4 heats or something, saw all the pros.i was like 20' from their tent, everyone that came out its like oh that's balaram stack,oh that's sam hammer.it was cool but the waves were trash
The Stella swell also didn't stay good in one place long enough to hold a contest. The footage going around was from the morning in Cape May then the afternoon an hour and a half drive north of there.
They totally blew it that Wednesday. It was over head with off shore winds the entire day. Not running it Tuesday was understandable considering travel restrictions. Still isn't that going to be an issue most swells in march? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Jeez, there were Swellies that were firing up the Hype Train almost a week before Stella hit. You can't tell me that not one of those pro's couldn't have predicted that swell and lined up a surgical strike. Then again, I really don't give a rat's arse about the "Cold War". Just another photo op and sponsor $$$ for the chosen few
I guess I should edit my last statement. Obviously, some of the pro's *did* make surgical strikes. Just curious as to why they didn't decide as a group to make it happen during what many predicted to be the swell of the year.
Why do you think they cancelled it because they couldn't forecast right? They posted a message saying they cancelled the comp because of travel difficulties. https://www.instagram.com/p/BRmDW8gFzXz/?taken-by=coldwarsurf
They actually announced a couple days ahead that they weren't going to run it. Probably had less to do with travelling difficulties than it did getting a bunch of adult surfers to bail on the day of the year to surf a stupid contest.
Especially when it was way better an hour north and south of Asbury Pretty sure Rob Kelly was very happy with his decision
They also invited outside attendees from other states that also had great surf. Sorry, but I wouldn't leave Hatteras to come to NJ to surf a contest.
I guess I just incorrectly surmised that the contest (and the notoriety and $$ that goes with it) was more important to these guys than free surfing during a swell that could make such a small homegrown event more popular. I don't follow Instagram or the contest scene, so forgive my ignorance. It was a legitimate question, but in reviewing my post I can see where it could be misconstrued as snarky, which was not my intention. Good luck to the contestants
