Did you know, the person who coined the term "gateway drug" was actually referring to alcohol and nicotine as a possible gateway to harder drugs? She found that young people who started on substances legal for adults (alcohol and cigarettes) had a increased rate of getting on harder drugs than those who only smoked pot. It wasn't until politicians started using the term to advance their agenda, that the meaning got misconstrued.
