    Hey y'all.

They's fixin ta replenish the east end beach this fall - spring.

    http://www.galvnews.com/news_ap/texas/article_75218537-d6c2-5954-9851-1e8a4fe6a3ba.html

I've only been here 5 yrs, and haven't had my beloved east end worked over like this. I finally get the sandbars kinda figgered out, and now this...

Any old timers have any reassuring words that my surf will still be here afterwards?

Nat, tell me we'll still be able ta surf this winter.

    Pleeeese

    Your nervous pal,

    Paulie

Hey IBC, good to have you back. Can't speak for Galveston, but at my beach in South Jersey the replenishment usually means no more waves for the time being. I don't know your beach's makeup as I have never done sand reconne there, but my sandbar is still there after they replenished, it's just really deep and only works if it's waist high or better and from dead low to 2 to 3 hours of incoming. We need Nor'easters to fill the sand back in. I guess you will need some tropical activity to put sand back on your bars.
    Good luck dude.

    Dangit.

Ya go out, exercise due diligence, proper sand reconne, then they move the durn sand.

    Well... It's done.

    Sand reconne...

The beach is WAAY bigger. That's the good part.

    The sandbars are HOSED.

The bottom depth varies all over the place. Very hard to predict where the dang waves are gonna break. Wave'll start liftin up outa the water, makin ya think yer gonna gitchu some. Then, it just shuts down. I hate teasers. Even the SUP dudes have ta paddle to keep on it. The only reliable place for now is the shore break, especially for shortboarders. I see some of 'em bypass the outside teasers and work the inside where she's still puttin' out. :p

I've been doing more bodysurfing than board surfing lately. You can REALLY tell how squirelly it is out there when you're IN the water, vs ON it. Take a couple steps and go from waist deep to neck deep. If the current is workin that day, can get dicey without fins. Been wearin mine more.

Sand mighta actually played a part in a dude's death on Easter. Poor kid watched his Dad go under at 35th St. Died.

    Story>http://texasbeachsafety.org/easter-tragedy/

I ain't been at every street affected. I'm usually between 17th and 27th St. YMMV.

    And, HEY y'all!

    Paulie

Hey Paulie, glad to have you back. Stick around, ya heah?

Related story: we've got a wave here that used to be a powerful hollow grinder but hasn't been anything more than shorebreak going on 5 years now. A few of the long time locals have said the place needs sand, and that they've seen dredges dump in that spot years ago and that it's made the spot pump before.

So eventually we find out that Surfrider has got some deal with the Army Corps of Engineers, and that they should be dredging and dumping in that area every year...But nobody has witnessed anything going on there for, well, at least 5 years.

So somebody gets a hold of their Congressman and voila, dredging begins almost immediately.

Again, this is a class wave that hasn't broken in years. The dumping doesn't seem to have any effect yet unfortunately.

    Keeping our fingers crossed

Hey dude. Yeah, the sand is everything. Hope yours comes back. After last week's gnar, our big new beach is already startin to relocate back out in the water. You can see the slope. You REALLY have to pick and choose your waves these days out here. It's like you got a room full of girls who seem like they ain't givin ANYTHING up. But you know ONE of em is the jackpot. If you could only tell which one beforehand...

There is this one place, with lots of amusement park rides on it, with a rock groin 2 blocks west of it, that seems to still be working fairly good. I only go there on weekdays. On weekends everybody from the mainland is on it. I slide up the seawall a few blocks where I can have it all to myself.

    Maybe some good news...

Was out at my weekday spot, almost high tide. Saw lots of spots at the (2nd?) sandbar just outside the rock groin that were walling up nice. Not crumbling, but actually rising up outa the water and pitching out, with surprising punch. I'm talking pitching out at least half the wave height, perhaps more. This with STRONG onshores. Not all down the beach, but you could find spots and work em. I usually bodysurf on the blown out days, like I did today. You coulda been out there rippin up some pretty punchy waist+ peaks, even on a short board. The rides were short, but pretty fun. Lots more power than what I've seen lately.

I saw the same thing walking up and down the east end afterwards.

Maybe all that rough weather we had a couple weeks ago has moved more sand than I thought back out into the water.

    I guess, be encouraged.

We're supposed to have more of the same tomorrow.

    More sand reconne hopefully.

Yeah, I hear ya. I think of that sometimes when I'm neck deep in the water, or deeper, bodysurfin. No board to hide on top of. The foam has been BROWN the past two days too.

Lots of fish bumpin into my legs today. Some days they jump over me, but they were hidin today.

Same punch today as yesterday. Now instead of crumbly waves casually washing by as you head out, you actually get thumped on the head. It's been a long time since I got thumped that hard by 3 foot surf. Pretty surprising.

Hope we get that little cleanup around Friday. A little extra "T" on my TGIF.

    Happy Friday y'all.

The cleanup arrived as advertised, but ya hadda be on it EARLY. Got to the weekday spot at sunrise. Couldn't believe I was the first one there. Waist + clean sets with nice offshores. HIGH TIDE bonus too. <Cha CHING> That 2nd sand bar was workin, homies. Definite barrells available. You kinda had to be out away from the center of the peak, cuz about 20 - 30 feet of it pitched out and slammed at the same time. If you were on either end of that, it was fun city. Peelers.

Surfed it for a few hrs. By then it dropped down to the thigh - waist range. The SUP dudes started showin up. Went in for some Gatorade, then body surfed the leftovers for another couple hours. Almost flat now.

Dang fine way to start the weekend.

The outer sandbar is still not there. I was laughin my butt off cuz this one dude was cussin up a storm at the teasers out there. Gotta do your sand reconne, homes. Teasers will piss a dude off. I know them outside waves look like 10s, but you ain't gettin none.

This here 8 on the next bar in, she'll wear yer ass OUT.

I'll take a friendly 8 over a cold fish 10. Life is short.

    Now I need a nap.

    :p

I was at the pier with the rides on top. Not sure if I was rippin, but I had a blast.

    Best web cam, IMO: https://www.ozolio.com/explore/RANL0000044E

Dudes are fishin out of a boat where we were surfin yesterday. Ain't hangin on or nothin.

    Oh, BTW...

If you're on a computer, you can take over the camera and aim it. I forget that lots of folks are on iPhone 10s.
