has anyone ever taken a boat out to the islands off the Eastern Shore fo virigina? Has anyone ever checked out the southern most part of Chincoteague where the island bends around into the bay? also when driving on the beach in va/md do you need to be fishing?

Been out on those islands many times, but not for the past several years, since the Nature Conservancy banned camping on most if not all of them. The surf can be epic under the right conditions. The payoff, if you go out there, is you'll be pretty much alone in a beautiful, natural environment. And the fishing is not to shabby, either.

thanks. I have always wanted to check those places out. looks like they might have some really diverse surf conditions. Would love to find a nice longboard spot around there

I love it down there too. I've fished off my kayak around the different barrier islands and inlets. Nobody is around!!! You're not supposed to camp overnight on most of the beaches but there's no one around to enforce it. I scouted some surf spots too-if I can remember Metompkin island looked like it had a decent break. You can paddle a kayak loaded with fishing and camping gear and tow your surfboard- possible epic surf safari. But I'm not advocating camping illegally now, just saying......:)

As for Chincoteague, I've only surfed it three times during swell and never got it good. IMO the northern end of Assateague breaks better.

I'm not too sure about driving on the beach down there.

Surfed off the coast during Earl boat access only. It was an epic all time day couple feet overhead blowing offshore and realling with 3 friends along for the ride. Not another person in sight not many places left like that in the US I have to say. Closely regarded "secret" spots though thats about all I can say. BUt is is a long coast south of Wallops so it is gauranteed there are tons of breaks down there if you committ to finding them and get lucky.

I'm moving down there..I am used to surfing Northern point breaks but time to retire to a warmer climate. It seems like it is hard to find a local surfer to ask or surf with. I'll be using my boat or kayak to find waves and feel it will be very hit and miss. I found this thread googling Eastern shore surf and if anyone can update any info it would be appreciated. I am very excited about the fising and the place in general but aprehensive about my long time surf addiction ending or being impaired. Glad to see some of you guys did score down there.

Can you drive a 4x4 from Chincoteague to Assateague hunting for a break? or just not worth the effort?

agree...but depending where u r launching from...very, VERY, tricky. Better have someone with experience if you are launching from the bay well south of Chincoteague...Surf can be simply perfect with the right conditions...and BIG red drum can be caught. Amazing area!

You are aware, of course, that you just replied to a thread that is 7 years old. Oh wait--you are a surfer, that means you are a moron. You were not aware then......
Most of those posting before you are either dead, in rehab, or living in Iowa......

Yes and No...not sure what u mean but you can drive on the sand from National Park in Chincoteague VA south, not north to AI va/md line. And from AI National park in MD, you can drive on the sand down to VA line...both are often closed at times...piper plovers or whatever else they feel like closing it for. Can be very irritating at times...Right now from MD side, currently closed around marker 23. Not sure about Chincoteague closure status right now.

Crossing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel coming back from a trip to Hatteras a few years ago there was a most amazing wave wrapping around Fisherman's Island. There was a tropical system offshore and the 3 to 4 foot ground swell was peeling perfectly around the island. the water that day looked like the Bahamas. It wasn't big, chest to shoulder high but just perfect. From the bridge it looks like an awesome setup.

Thought Gruvi was back and made this thread, then got all excited. Super bummed there will be no Gruvi appearances today.
