So you want me to go to Hawaii for something "different"? These are my last five trips from most recent and not including Norway....Mozambique, Taiwan, Panama, Azores, Nova Scotia. I avoid the herd like the plague. You just talk nonsense, while amusing, it gets old after a while. Comparing Norway to NH is laughable. Seriously, do an image search for Lofoten Islands and if you see any resemblance to where you live I'll buy drinks next time I want to play nickel slots at a run down casino.
Don't take Barry too seriously, he would love to do exactly what you're doing, don't let him fool you.
Seems alot of guys are either doing or considering a CR trip around sept-dec. I was planning on going in November. SI meet and greet in CR anyone? Let's coordinate this sh!t
Game over man. Although Barry does go to PR occasionally to complain about that. More important - how was surfing in the Azores? That's the next place I want to go, though not just for surfing. Sounds awesome.
The Azores are pretty awesome. The best thing about it surfing wise is there are 2 main breaks, one on the north coast and one on the south coast. They're about 30 minutes apart so if the wind is bad at one you can quickly zip over to the other side. Traveling the whole island is easy and fun. There's some really good hiking opportunities too. The weather can be a bit unpredictable but the results are constant rainbows all day, every day. Probably the prettiest place I've ever been.
My choice would be Barbados, but I owe my wife a trip to Ireland, not a surf trip, but a trip I may get to surf once or twice. Her family is from Galloway, and I've seen some nice pics of liners wrapping inside the bay maybe two foot OH and manageable, clean waves, not the slabs up north. I'm too old for that. So if any of of ya'll been there or have any knowledge of the Emerald Isle, pray tell.
I have a friend who's family owns a few restaurants down here, they are from El Salvador, he has been saying it's way more gringo friendly nowadays. I may have to make that my next choice. I'm a regular foot, it will be goode for me to score some hollow rights. Is it gringa friendly, or a boys trip only?
Alas, I shall likely not be going on any international surfing ventures, but I do like hearing aboot them. If I ever went to Nova Scotia, I'd HAVE to look up Frankie, though. I don't know that there are really too many undiscovered places though. Maybe those places ya hear aboot out way offshore. The ones ya gotta take a shrimpin boat out to. I think I recall y'all got such a place up around Maine or Rhode Island.
Yes, different, for big waves. Your travel destinations are for grommet waves, baby waves. For you, large waves would be different, but....you have no balls. None. With the boards and gear available today, if I were your age , that is what I would be doing. Not wasting my time doing the eco-trips you listed with the herd. And, btw, YOU are the herd. Edit--my point is this--you view "location" as where to avoid the herd. I view "challenge" as the place to avoid herds. And know this--as DSUP recognizes....I am yanking your chain, granola/eco trip boy! <grin>
It is pretty fascinating how large swaths of the planet have been opened up to surfin since wetsuites became so advanced. Places like Iceland, where they have icebergs in the surf, the Huldufolk (gnomes), and friendly ladies named Vigdis who, like things (Chavez). Not such a "small world" any more.
You and me both. It's the most serious we've been about moving out of the country. My favorite stretch of beach that I've ever been to was Cambutal. Secluded, at the end of the road, various types of waves, small population with a solid mix of expats and locals. We found this little home for rent and seriously, seriously considered moving. I kept this pic as my screen saver for the longest time. Panama has solid healthcare and infrastructure, would be a solid choice!
True. But what made it even worse (to the locals) is the internet. The HERD uses the internet to google locations. Bottom line is this--if you use the internet to find locations--you are the HERD!! Because that is was the herd is doing. Period. The only reason that a location is listed/represented on the internet, is because some form or other of marketing wants you to know about the place. Again, bottom line, that means there are no longer any herd less locations. There are, however, many herd-less challenges. Some places take balls to surf when large, where many will sit on the beach. Those are the last remaining herd-less surf spots, even if in Hawaii. But only avant-garde surfers recognize that. Others try to "save the lemurs" while looking for surf locations.
My wife went to El Salvador and she didn't really like it. I scored a really large swell which was cool but if you go anywhere off the beaten path it can be a little sketchy. If all your looking to do is surf it would be a great choice. We did a few volcano hikes and some legit mountain biking all of which you had to have armed guards accompanying you. Another negative for me was the locals are aggressive (even the chicks and especially the bodyboarders) at almost every lineup. I have no desire to go back. I'd opt for Nicaragua or Panama.
I'm sold 100%. To pull this off though,I have to convince my wife. That will take a few years, and some major dinero.
