So I went up to check the radical surf and the whole dune we had is pretty much gone. The beach is flat for once and the jetties are back! I like it a lot. Just had to throw that out there. I was gonna check IRI but Rt 1 is still closed. Seems like theyll close it tomorrow too.
crazy... its prob a good thing they spent all those millions for those dunes, even tho they got wiped out. Imagine if the dunes weren't there!
yea for real. This same thing happened the first time they replenished everything and it made some nice sandbars for a little while.
True. In my opinion, they shluld have just built a giant sea-wall. Save some money and it wouldve gotten the job done.
Sad to hear about bethany....saw a lot of pictures and footage on the news. But on a positive note, THE JETTIES ARE BACK!!!!!! never thought I'd see 'em again. The resurrection of Bethany and long right handers!
Or they should not have had the arrogance to build houses right on the beach and think they could hold back Mother Nature... (obviously, that goes for anywhere, not just BB)
True and furthermore why should we as taxpayers be expected to foot the bill if a bunch of vacation homes are destroyed. Its like building a skyscraper on a fault line. Barrier Islands become sandbars and sandbars become barrier islands.
because the jetties were awesome andrew. and apparently, now they are back. that is precisely why I said that....
i remember those jetties well from the mid-80's when i started bodyboarding.i'll have to admit, there was almost always waves back then,so i'm glad to see them re-emerging.i remember those long rights quite well.
i remember the hurricane of '86,bodyboarding on main st. BB.i got the last wave before the lifeguards called everyone in & closed the beaches.that wave was my very 1st double-overhead ride.droppin in on that monster was crazy,my scrawny 13 year old self will never forget that long steep drop.what crazy fast right that was.ahh,BB jetty breaks in the 80's....
I've done a little bit of research on coastal engineering. And, it turns out in some cases, that sea walls dont actually help prevent erosion. They can block the water from moving past them (to a certain point), but the sand at the foot of the wall actually can get eroded even worse. So, you can end up having a really crappy beach. I dont there exists a full proof method to stop the erosion, but however much it costs, the towns are going to spend it, since the beach tourism fuels most of the local economy.
does anyone have any other pics of the beach and how bad the dunes and seagrass around garfield pkwy mainstreet have washed away? curious to see.... also, I reallly hope those jetties become more well-defined, they make for some nice peelers
I surfed oc all day today then went to check out what bethany looked like on my way home and the waves your breaking much nicer than anywhere else i looked.. the jetties are peaking out a bit but not as much as they use to.. and theres only a little dune left with like a ten foot drop from the walk way haha.. they were giving people tickets if they went on the walkway towards the beach
That would never happen. people who own ocean front property have way to much say in the policy of things like that. They would see it as taking away from property value because a seawall would be so unsightly. Not to mention that an It may not even save money to build a wall. wpould prob cost more. all they did in ocean city, md was put up a fence and some grass like 10 or 15 years ago and the dunces eventually came to be. It alot more complicated then that....
The jetties are awesome. We need to get back to when Bethany was a surf spot and also a safe place for swimming. There used to be sandbars and good rights and lefts. We need another alternative like Boss' idea for a sea wall or a man-made underwater barrier reef.
the is an old story... ...but I always throw in my ten. The local economy RUNS on the VERY big TAXES the people in Bethany (any beach front for that matter) pay the town/state. These are multi-million dollar homes. They are paying the big bucks and it off sets the taxes for every one west. I have the same size house as alot of people in bethany, but I payed a fraction and a fractions of the tax. There taxes payed do give them rights to have a dune. I dont want to see anyone loose their homes (vacation or not) because we want to catch some sh!t a$$ rights. Don't get me wrong, I have caught my fare share of was on every jetti in bethany. It's close to my home. But surfing is for pure pleasure. The jetties were put there to help stop beach erosion..that failed. Sand pumping does work and protects their homes really well. To think any human would say "I hope you loose your home so I can get waist high waves off off of some rocks" is rediculous! ***Sand pumping works and they will do it again. They are figuring out every day how to do it cheeper. In australia they have already created solar and wind power dredging stations and they are coming here soon. The fed will produce another grant for bethany to pump again because the people in DC rely on tourist season. The money and taxes that come out of bethany/delaware beaches are a good thing to the gov. SO... don't think the jetties are sticking around; and anyways, they are almost covered again. 1 or 2 south swells and they will be gone. Shore break will return. The waves have broken on the beach in bethany FOREVER!
