Never surfed Puerto and probably never will. Definitely not at that size. I don't think Tres is as heavy at all at same size. Puerto is a heavy beach break. I guess it would be like heavy Hatteras or some of the Jersey beach breaks but much heavier with all the energy and three times larger. Closest thing I surfed that would compare energy wise is Hermosa and maybe off the wall on a pumping swell. But really, that wave just seems to have so much more power. No thanks.

I would agree with your Tres/Puerto assessment. The period alone is greater and it is the Pacific.
But I would still do Puerto at 12 faces, not swell. Years ago I would have done it even larger; if you are young I suggest you do so; you can only regret NOT doing it. If those guy are out there, so could we be. Would be fun, with the proper board, of course, one that allows early catch. There is plenty of water under those waves--remember, waves break in water depth that is 1/2 of their height.
Of course, making a mistake could be painful, but it can be crossing the street as well.....

And btw fatness, you posting about surfing with your chubby fingers 37 times per day doesn't make you a surfer, quite the opposite. Internet surfer for sure.

Archy, as I am sure many therapists have told you, it wasn't your fault. Hang tough and keep cooking gourmet meals for yourself ( sounds lonely) and eventually things will get better.

    Actually, who am I kidding.

I went to Puerto Escondido once. My favorite non-Oahu surfing destination in the world.

    I hope to visit again.

Yup, but mostly with lighter weights 10,12-16 lbs. Many reps, been doing it for decades.
Also cycle often, walks, but never running anymore (had both knees scoped long ago).
Am I a paragon of fitness?? No, but still am what my friends call "in great shape".

I also recently introduced "Whey" protein in my diet to help prevent loss. Building muscles in your 60s is much harder as required androgens are declining. But, still fit and still able to surf well even in some relatively large days.

I remember one of my first trips to PR... I had never surfed Tres at size and it was solid 15' faces. The biggest day I ever had down there. There weren't forecasting websites back then, so I didn't know what the swell was doing. After surfing all morning, the swell was still pumping. When I got out I asked another dude... "do you think it will be bigger tomorrow?" He goes... "it's big enough!"

That was a point in my life I'd go out in literally anything. I was young and healthy and so driven that if I had any limits, I didn't know what they were. Today... if it was DOH it would have to be clean. I just can't take the poundings anymore. Pulling into 15' closeout barrels gets a pass these days.

I have a friend who has been there for the past three weeks. He's surfed some big waves - Nelscott Reef, Waimea, Himalayas etc. He told me this was the heaviest and most challenging place he's ever paddled out. Humbling experience for him.
