I saw there was a power outage. They're doing construction on the bridge and hit a cable or something and had to evacuate non residents. Something like 3 weeks to fix it.

They are building the new bridge to replace the old bonner bridge over oregon inlet and hit the power source under water and totally douched it. No definite timeline, but generators, state of emergency and the ocracoke generator broke so they mandatory evacuated non-residents. Buxton/frisco have generator power/Rolling blackouts but it is weak inadequate so now all Hatteras is also mandatory nonresidents evac.

They have no exact idea when full power will be restored. Locals only. You can not get on unless you live there.

 

I thought the cause was Chevy going nuts over asian girl postings and then going on a rampage!!??!!

 

The evacuation makes no sense to me. Are they keeping out day trippers as well from driving down to fish or surf?
If people want to leave because they can't live without AC fine.....that's on them. Bring in Ice trucks and give away free ice so people can keep the essentials cold. Nags Head isn't that far away to go buy groceries.

 

The power can't stay online because the demand is too much so it keeps tripping the generators. The giant vacation homes suck a lot of power. Lots of said homes don't even have screens. It's a tough blow for people who rented a home and can't go on vacation. The rental companies do not reimburse for this.

 

Thank god this didn't happen to my wife and I when we were just there.

I feel bad for the local businesses who will be losing a big chunk of income in the middle of the season depending on how long this drags out. Renters who opted for rental insurance should at least get their money back though they still lose out on their vacation.

It's funny, in the days of my youth ('60s & '70s) we vacationed there in mostly primitive conditions. None of the rental houses in Buxton had A/C though they weren't gigantic McMansions then either. There was no TV or phones except the pay phone down at the Red Drum. We only used electricity to cook and run some fans to blow the hot August air around. Back then I think we would have gotten by. How times have changed.

 

Nowadays, it is the computer generation that has no idea what"roughing it" is.
For them, it means no wifi.....

 

Nc law, trip insurance covers it. This is in one way akin to hurricane evac. No storm damage, so not really nearly as bad.

But the place cannot allow nonresidents on the island with limited power. Residents need power.

Evacuations and trip insurance are a psrt of hatteras/ocracoke. Everyone knows that.

You can have a trip that is paradise or the worst nightmare and everything in between. This is part of living on a barrier island up to over 30 miles from the mainland.

I always stay in Buxton. And like the residents, i learn to accept the risk. For me it's worth it. A lot of people have a couple bad trips and never go back.

Takes a certain kind of person.

 

Not even no wifi. Just slow wifi is cause for revolution.

But I think we are all spoiled to some extent and accustomed to modern comfort and conveniences.

Yep. The existence of huge multi-family McMansions for rent gives the illusion that the place is something other than what you describe. But this is life on a shifting sand bar. Always has been. Always will be. It's worth it to me too.

 

There is just too many people there now, and if they paid for a house with central air/hot tub they deserve what they paid for. So the motels/rentals almost need to shut down because a lot of renters may expect to be compensated for, not caring about the owners loss.

Evetybody stands to lose something. Get in line. The more you have, the more you put out, often results in the more you lose.

It is a terrible situation the bridge builders should pay for. Not these owners/renters/business owners.

Great post. The older hatteras, like anything, was better in a lot of ways, but central air in summer is nice, too.

 

Sorry, but, it's not that easy. I get what you're saying, but people use power, and will, and there is not enough at this precise moment for residents.

 

Of course i thought the same thing. But it has. Hurricane arthur 4th of july weekend a couple years back. Nightmare. Keep going to hatteras enough it is bound to happen eventually.
