Well bouys the old lady keeps dropping hints that she wants to go to portugal this winter, and considering i have only half of the year to hang out with her (due to the nature of my job) i most likely must oblige. (unless i break up with her then its straight to indo or mex or parts unknown).

So hoping for the complete package here if possible:

-what months are the best to go in the winter (obviously swells and conditions are subject to change)

-wheres the best places to stay

-transportation situation, rental car or mass transit or buy something cheap when your their

-best zones and a couple key waves

    -anything else you would recommend

i know i can find alot of this on surfline travel but i figure you homies that have done the euro trip thing would have some solid advice too. Also i hope to stop off in Ireland, maybe the UK if the swells right, Spain, possibly Morocco and others if it all works out.

between Monterrey, Europe, and Hawaii I better hope i keep stacking cash this fire season.

I might try the camper van strategy. Your best bet will be to stay mobile and follow the swell. In the winter the swell tends to come from the north so you'll be itching to follow the coast north and east to the Basque region. If you pass through Galicia, stop at the Prado Surf Escola Sabón outside of A Coruña. Chat with the owner Eric Rebiere. He's an excellent surfer that knows Europe really well. He'll be able to share some local knowledge about Portugal, Spain, France, Morocco, etc.

For the winter (literally any winter month from December through March) you should definitely go to Algarve. It will be warmer and less rainy, and will definitely have swell. From Lisbon north it won't be as big or consistent, and the weather won't be nearly as nice. Still... bring a full suite.

I've never stayed in Algarve... I stayed in Lisbon and and the Ericeira area... so I can't help you there. But I'm sure there are tons of places to stay that are off the map, so to speak. I'd just worry about getting there, then just look around for a decent place. If it's anything like Ericeira, it will be super cheap and close to great surf.

I'd plan to fly into Lisbon for sure, and rent a car. Ask if they have GPS that talks to you in English. Fortunately for me, I borrowed one and took it with me. Without it I would have wasted a lot of time finding my way around instead of surfing.

Use ATMs. DON'T go to banks or cash exchanges.

Drugs are decriminalized there, so be ready to be approached several times a day... and watch your wallet.

I avoided Morocco... it's a total hassle and waste of time, IMO, if you're in Algarve. There's so much to do and see in Portugal... a week or two isn't close to enough. Between the surf in and around Algarve... the Lisbon area and Ericiera... then north to Porto... you'll wish you had at least a month.

Boards... You can actually rent decent boards in Portugal. If you'd rather buy when you're there, go ahead. I like the convenience of renting, and actually like riding a bunch of different boards when I'm traveling.

    Have fun, Trev...

Go all winter, or at least as long as you can, it is cheaper than HI, but bring 2 or 3 4-mils and boots, maybe cap for windy mornings

the portubros are never really on it till like 830-9am

    base out of Ericiera
sueprtubos is 45 min north and nazere 45 min north of that
its about 3 hours north of the algarve the algarve has many many nooks and crannies that light on on swells bigger than 3 meteres (get your queens english books out)

Base out of Ericiera, it is the 'north shore' of europe with a bunch of slabs and points all within a 15 minute drive

also buy the Euro stormrider guide on amazon, worthwhile 25 bucks, good mental masturbation material until you get there, help you chart out where you want to go

    I support the Portugal choice
but I kinda think your girl is half tarded since its so much warmer in hawaii

Been to the Algarve. Surfed a bit along them cliffs. Was fun, we enjoyed it, but we were there end of summer. Head highs.
It was an unplanned trip to go retrieve our daughter who was in Morocco for the summer, broke her arm, and could not carry all her luggage and violin. So wife and I went, retrieved her and spent a few days in Algarve.
Surfed early; nobody else out. Nobody. Except for a sh1tload of fishermen casting all around me.
Stay north of Lisbon; mo' betta.

No one has mentioned Peniche, I stayed and surfed there for a week last October during the Supertubos comp, it was amazing, so many spots, regardless of wind because of the way it juts out in the ocean (something is always working), all types of setups there, surfed Almagreira as well, Nazare is 45 minutes away to give you some perspective of where it is. Had a blast, cheap air bnb 5 minutes to a left hand point break we surfed daily. Food was amazing, beautiful place, the wife will dig it. Rent a car.

The other people posting are right, a week or two is not long enough, Portugal has so much to offer in terms of waves, culture, etc.... I visited while I was living in Morocco, and yes Morocco is worth the hassle, but you'll need several more months down there :) Plan another trip

Spelling it out for O'Barry againe: Retard = French Canadian. The theory also works in reverse.

But, the females make the 2nd most beautiful retards, slightly behind Venezuelans.

Mine is incredibly bright--she achieved the highest grade point average as a chemistry major that the department had seen in over 10 years. You know how hard that is to achieve in an english speaking college, when you can barely speak the language?? Her organic chem prof told me that--he was my organic chem prof as well--he then proceeded to imply that I was the retard.....could not disagree, I suppose.
And she was and remains gorgeous as well.......

if you're open to hostels and relaxed living I would recommend a place called the Gota D'agua (drop of water). Located about 15 minutes south of Lisbon and in the heart of a surf town, its the best of both worlds
