I was going through some pictures today of a trip I took a few years back: hauling from SF down to LA. I know it's not the most unique trip on Earth, but for a week it was just me, my board and the big blue Pacific. I think there's benefits to be had spending considerable time alone, it really helps you reset. Throw in the ocean and it's the best detox money can't buy. I remember pulling off the highway at one point near the Point Sur Lighthouse with no cell service, no cars around and nothing but me and the crickets and the pounding ocean. I snapped a pic - I wish I could get a HQ version up here. I may have ventured off California 1 for a maximum of 5 miles the whole trip, and was able to stop at so many great town/surf spots along the way. Surfing Sandspit, chest/head high, with one other dude in Santa Barbara may have been the highlight of the trip. Since car advise is covered, what's been the best road trip you've taken, surf or otherwise with said auto? Curious to hear how many have made this same trip before.
Years back, I just got home to DE after a 3 month stay in San Diego. My cousin and I drove to FL to my old stomping grounds. On the way down, stopped by a college to see some chicks, then to Daytona, then to Cocoa to surf for a few hours. Then hopped back in the whip and drove over to good ol' Pinellas County. fished, drank, saw some old friends, met some new female friends, visited some family up in Tarpon. Then drove back home. It was fun being able to stop where ever the F we wanted whenever the F we wanted. Only surfed on the way down. On the way back we stopped back by my friends college and partied for a night. Good times
That's a fun trip Z! I've hauled from Key West to NYC (twice!) and loved taking my time up 95. Stopped in Palm Beach, St. Augustine, Savannah, Chucktown and some others. I love that southern way of life but man idk if I can handle that slow pace everyday. Obviously stopped at Pedro's too.
In the mid 80's I drove a VW bus from Jacksonville Florida to Fairbanks Alaska. Just me and my two dogs. No heat, defrost, cell phone, GPS. Just pointed northwest and kept going. Camped out most of the way. I got lost a couple of times and made a few tactical errors and ended up driving 6,000 miles. At that time 1500 miles of the ALCAN Highway was unpaved. To top it off, once I got up there the van blew up and I had to hitchhike 365 miles through the interior. Other than seeing my children get born it was the most amazing adventure of my life.
I had done so many trips with the fam when I was little and we didn't stop except to use the bathroom. So it was nice to be able to stop where ever. It wasn't by myself, but my cousin is pretty laid back and was down for all of it. HA HA Pedro's, that dump, but you have to stop! Damn Pdub, that's a rugged trip! Sounds like it def was a rewarding trip!
Did the SF to SD trip one time... that was the best. Surfed a ton of spots, some I don't even know the names of. Others, including Rincon, Malibu, San O, Trestles... were less exciting, but still rewarding in other waves. The best experience I had on that trip was a super glassy day at some nameless rock reef just south of San Simeon. Just me and a bunch of seals. It wasn't that big... just crazy beautiful and not another surfer in sight. Made me feel like what it must have felt like back in the '60 when dudes when on a "surfin' safari" up and down the coast.
When my last grandparent died, I ditched work and drove from SE NC to Rhode Island. I don't remember the storm that was spinning out in the Atlantic, but there was a storm and surf all the way up the coast. I spent 5 days in Rhode Island, surfing Point Judith, Matunuk and that crazy long left in the cove that I can't remember. I just remember my cousin said it only broke once or twice a year. It wasn't quite big enough for Ruggles to work, but there were guys out there giving it a try. On the way back down I went down the Outer Banks and caught Nags Head pier a few feet over head and perfect. I check the Hatteras Lighthouse too, but it wasn't right. Took the ferry back to the mainland and drove home. I did it all by myself and it was perfect. There is the opportunity, if we get a slow spinning hurricane, to duplicate that trip, and even take it on up to the Canadian maritimes. I think that would be the perfect trip. Outerbanks - Rhode Island (f* jersey) - New Hampshire - Nova Scotia. You could also start in Florida, I guess, but there is a big distance between North Florida and the Outerbanks.
Great book about two Limeys who do just that: https://www.amazon.com/Chasing-Dean-Surfing-Americas-Hurricane/dp/184024741X Check it out, fun late summer read.
I've taken quite a few road trips, just not many of them involved surfing. Most surf road trips have been up fairly local, day trips to Long Island and Delaware and stuff like that. I did take a trip to Illinois/Wisconsin to surf Lake Michigan once, with my two best friends. It was definitely worth the trip. Back when they had a storm a few years back, which brought huge swell. Never thought I'd be surfing while looking at the Chicago skyline before, so that was definitely suite.
LMAO, you sound like my cousin! Everything is for poor people. He sent me a pic of some caribbean chicken dish while he was in St Croix and I said you need some rice. He replied, no I don't, rice is for poor people.
Rented a camper van in Brisbane. Drove up the coast to Noosa with a few stops on the way up. Scored some small but super lined up surf. Still remember popping up and just trimming down the line for a few hundred yards on a knee high wave. Parked wherever I could at night and found the local watering hole. After a few days north, turned it around and headed south. Surfed a few spots on the gold coast but not much in the way of swell and just too many damn people. Surfed a bunch of spots in between gold coast and brisbane and don't remember most of the names. Snapped my shortboard at a ****ty sandbar in Byron Bay. This was one of my all-time moron moments as I decided to surf this sandbar instead of walking down to the point. After snapping my board I walked down to the point and it's about chest high and lined up. Got hassled by the cops for sleeping in the van as well. Got 5 or 6 speeding tickets sent to my dorm a month or so later. Still outstanding... Scored some decent surf, explored a bunch and did not get herpes. It was a pretty successful trip. If I find the pictures I'll post.
Iv been waiting for the right time to do a trip like that. Iv been saying for years now i want to follow a came swell up the east coast. Only problem is I'm north, so id have to drive south to meet the swell, then follow. But like you said, we need a slow spinning hurricane. One day the time will be right and ill pull it off. One day
Come by joizy and I'll join you, bass. If we get anything remotely similar to that this season a couple of my friends are talking about driving down to obx and continue pushing up north as she blows. I'd really like to get up to east Long Island and also some northern states this fall.
I enjoy a good road trip. You get to see the lay of the land rather and experience places you otherwise wouldn't see. I've done a couple long ones....from the southern coast of NC to Nova Scotia (and I'm talking all of Nova Scotia including Cape Breton and the Cabot Trail, which I highly recommend), from the southern coast of NC to Boulder Colorado (I had zero expectations for Kansas and it turned out I loved it) and anytime you can drive the Blue Ridge Parkway it's an awesome experience. I definitely want to drive all the way to the West Coast one day but I'll hold off for that until we get a RV. The best road trip outside of the States was driving almost all of Morocco.
When I was much younger, a bud and I left from South Jersey to camp and surf the Outer Banks the day after Xmas. For some reason, my mom could not fathom that we were leaving the day after Xmas instead of hanging with family. We were going to just camp in the dunes, not knowing anything about the OBX and that you can't really do that. We got to a campground and as we're stringing up our tent the ropes broke so we ended up mounting our tent between two trees with duck tape. Surf was fun, though. When the company I work for sent me from DC to Monterey CA, I did a road trip down to San Diego and then up the coast. If any of you remember when Surfline used to have a forum, I ended up meeting one of the forumites I was chatting with (Honu I think was his name) and almost met up with some dude called Mudlogger/Mud who was a total douche but I ended up kind of liking in the end. Anyway, crashed at Honu's pad, ate steaks and drank beers, and then we surfed some named spot in that area and I got like one wave. Crowded as crazy. I did a solo trip from Oahu to Kauai right before I left there. Not sure if that counts in this context. But the family gave me 4 days alone before they came out, and I trekked up and down the west coast, surfing solo and simply had the best time of my life.
