From what I see looks to be several days of groundswells starting mid next week... sometimes those early days are the best imo
I was very disappointed that I did not get to see andy and pete mendia.i remember that day very very well, biggest waves I ever seen in jersey, wasnt the best conditions there was a lot of closeouts but it was thee biggest I have seen here,a real hurricane swell. anyway I believe it was sunday, the biggest day,aug 29th I think.got there around 7 am thinking hey if the pros are coming to jers, this is going to be the place.squan was one of the few places that can hold the size,it was a solid 14' with 16'+ sets. I started surfing like 2006-2007 so bill was like the first real swell I ever seen,i didnt have the internet back then and didn't even know other people in nj surfed lol.it would be great to get another swell like that. and a few weeks before that we had a decent tropical storm swell, tropical storms were always good imo because most beaches can handle the size since its not a 15' swell.i surfed mb and I remember the water was at the rock wall, like u just walk down the steps and jump in the water from there, there was no sand lol.good times.i have a lot of camcorder footage from those days, the little tape that u put in the big tape to watch on the vcr.would be cool if u could convert that to a dvd or something
the one main thing I love about surfing is there will always be waves I grew up street skating, and a lot of places I skated as a kid now have no skateboarding signs and other stuff like that.with surfing, there will never be a shortage of waves and places to ride them. 100 years from now people will still be surfing, while the private sector will continue to demolish the woods to build new homes destroying bmx and mx trails and jumps.only way to stop surfing is to build a marina lol,but theres still plenty of ocean left
Pollution? Couple places in Mexico I surfed as a kid I wouldn't dare surf now due to what is spilling out of the pipes into the water.
the latest GFS run. Its a bad B-movie on SYFY...taking out Manhattan. The European model...Well I planned on remodeling the beach house in NC anyway...Still hoping for a turn that takes out Nepal
The early swells are usually the best looking, after a few days of pounding surf the beachbreaks can get all weird ,sand washed out ,huge backwash, closeouts, all the stuff that makes beachbreaks so interesting.
Irma is still a week away from us and the long range models could change a lot by then but is is worth noting that this morning's GFS models show something far worse than Sandy for NJ. GFS 192 GFS 198
"Morning model runs: 0z Euro: Very close but just north of the Caribbean Islands Tues-Wed, Through the Central and northwest Bahamas sep 9-11th. Cat 4 landfall near Charleston, SC overnight Sep 11-12th. 6z GFS: Misses Caribbean and Bahamas, turns north, closest approach to NC on sep 10 (faster than Euro), landfall near Atlantic City, NJ in the morning of Sep 10th. cat 3. and quickly moves out. HWRF has cat 4 north of the Caribbean islands, HMON as well. Canadian misses Caribbean and Bahamas and turns Irma out to sea (West of Bermuda, East of the US) The GFS Ensembles concentrate around NC/VA this morning. Two camps are faster moving storm GFS/GEFS that moves further north and the euro which has a slower moving storm, caught behind and further south. Euro also has a stronger storm and is much more dangerous for the Bahamas. Too soon to tell beyond 5 days, but looking better for the Eastern Caribbean islands, but mixed for the Bahamas, and east coast seems more likely than not for a landfall. Where is still up in the air, SC/NC/VA seems to be the current midpoint. But FL/GA and north of VA still have a high chance, but unless the timing drastically changes Florida seems less likely. Out to sea is still a possibility as well, more likely than Florida."---flhurricane.com
I wonder what the 3 start rating means....but only one star later in the day when it drops to 20 feet. Gotta love MSW.
