Can someone please summarize, in plain language, what net neutrality is and why people are currently up in arms about it?

 

It is basically gives Verizon and other providers control over the internet. They can have preferred websites and will slowdown or make non-preferred websites difficult to find. Think Verizon preferring Fox News over MSNBC, they will provide fast searching on Fox, but dial up slow for MSNBC. The big worry is with small business. Let's say you want to buy a xyz, well the internet providers it is feared will give preference to large corps and slow down the service/make it difficult to find for the little guys.

 

Google does this already lol.

Ok, so it sounds not cool. Who is responsible for trying to change the status quo, and why?

I am not 100% but I don't think google picks winners and losers, who gets listed on page 1 is decided on traffic or a company being really freakin good at using SEO words. The company I work for has zero business being on page one for certain things but we have some smart nerds that know the right keywords on our website to use to get us on the best page.

I think the people responsible can be pointed directly to the service providers. They feel it is their networks and they should have the right to decide who they prefer. The problem is let's say magicseaweed runs some Verizon ads and SI doesn't, good luck trying to find this website and typing fungus is a kook in a quick way.

 

It's a weird one to put into a box. While the service providers do own the networks, it does take it out of the consumers hands to pick winners and losers. The best company at the best price winning deals/business is capitalism, not certain companies deciding what we can search. But.... they do own the networks.

net neutrality treats internet access like a utility - equal access for all, no high-speed lanes for more $'s. the big ISP's would prefer to have it as cable tv on steroids. without it, the internet might look something like this:

I'm sure you're mostly correct. But man, I remember in the not-too-distant past when you could enter one simple word or phrase and Google would return a very broad spectrum of resources. Nowadays, results are extremely limited and seem as if often guided politically, among other things.

I tend to believe that Google has fiddled with their algorithms to better fit their business plan.

But to stay on point here, I think that the considerable majority of people like everything as it is. Unfortunately, I also see that such changes will most likely be inevitable due to corporate greed.

So does "neutrality" mean status quo, or that the general public is about to be neutered?

i find the whole issue mildly amusing in the fact that prior to 2015, when none of these rules were in place, this wasn't an issue - and hadn't been since the internet was created. But now, you wanna roll back regulations and sweet tap dancing jesus, you'd think I just kicked a puppy in front of my 4 year old.
