These winter flat spells are worse then the summer ones lol they seem to last forever! And serious flatness... lake Atlantic... not even a ripple.

I'm really bummed- I just got a new board custom shaped board about 2 months ago specifically for winter! Surfed it twice... really stoked on the board but going a bit crazy- thankfully been busy with family and work to keep me from idle time and going nuts!!

^^^ Winter flat spells are downright depressing. At least in summer there's talent on the beach... maybe go spearfishing... go for a sail. None of that applies in the winter.

I was thinking yesterday we need a solid overhead swell. I'm not a "big wave" guy... I really don't care how big (or small) it is, as long as I can go surfing.... But it's been a long time since we've had some thumping swell.

I paddled out with one of my friends who drove over from the Gulf and stayed over to get up early and hit it before sunrise.

First couple spots we checked looked fun but I knew there would be better wind a bit North so we headed that direction and scored some meaty waves before I had to run to work. I only had 45 minutes to find the one that I could remember for the rest of the day, but it was worth it! My friend is still out there, he headed more North since the wind started getting on it. It’s smaller up there but cleaner.

Swell continues to fill in. Wind looks choice tomorrow. Can’t wait! I have another friend coming over for that too. Good times!

yes, exactly... in the summer you can even just go out for a paddle or a swim, just to get wet! I used to have a hobie cat... that was tons of fun- kept it on Belmar beach for a number of years...

I am itching for some solid surf. Im not a big wave guy either, specially around here where the big waves usually end up just closing out... but a nice overhead peeling day would be tons of fun! I had the board made for hollow days when wearing the extra rubber... cant wait!!

Trying to surf for the first time since the achilles tear 5 months ago. Sitting on the beach in jax for tomorrow's surf.

    Pure stoke.

You got a good weekend (judging by forecast), as it looks pretty suite there. My friend who lives there has been complaining for months because of how bad it's been. We exchanged a few texts yesterday and he's ready to do some surfing this weekend. Hope you have fun down there!

And the lack of posts from our Northeast/Mid-Atlantic posters pretty much backs up just how pathetic the surf has been by us. I don't mind surfing when we get an Arctic blast or polar vortex like this, as long as the waves are just a little bit better than mediocre, but we're not getting that right now. Not that I've had a lot of time, but had some days over Christmas and nothing. I'll be off this Sunday before heading out of town for a week on business, and not a damn thing to surf.

I got a wave runner that I go out on during the Summer. Going swimming at the beach is still fun, even with no waves. A lot of Summer time activities, even when you can't surf, especially with all the down time that I have. I can also go out on my bikes, whether it's my street bike or dirt bike. Too cold for that during this time of year. I don't wanna go near by bike this time of year. I have to plug my truck in at night this time of year, it's dreadful.

Yeah, I only got a couple in as well--absence of surf, holidays, helping sick family members--all seemed to conspire to keep me away.
But I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night!!!!! hahaha

But, one thing for sure, weather changes, surf will be back, healthier, warmer days will be back, etc....and we will be surfing and dropping in on others with a vengeance!!!

Thats the spirit Barry! Maybe after all this flatness we will be gifted another crazy run of swell like we had in September!

How true... It will take at least two days of swell for everybody to "level off" after not having surfed in weeks. A few good barrels and then everything can return to normal.

This morning was so damn fun, I needed it too, so thankful for the waves I got. Me and a couple friends hit my go to spot first but it was relentless shorepound early coming off high tide.

I figured it would be better further North, so we headed that direction and I’m glad we did.

Easy paddle out with offshores at our back and more organized surf. It was shoulder / Head high with some sets pushing overhead. It was a bit slow early but as the tide dropped it started firing and I got my fill of waves. I rode the 6’4” Flashback Fish, it was the right call, it was so rippable but tricky getting into them.

Tomorrow should be fun too, hope the size doesn’t come down too much.

All of us here in jersey are happy for you... really we are

I actually checked the surf today... hopeful that there would be something after the snow this morning... well it was flat, literally like a lake. I waiting hoping that something would roll through, maybe a waist high liner... finally I saw something coming- as it got closer I could tell is was only like 1ft high wave, then it broke on the beach....I should have checked Belmar, I heard it was going off

I'm a little over a week away from taking a 3-4 day surf trip, with two of my best friend's, the brother of one of them and my two nephews. All paid for by one of the friend's, the one who makes like 3 times more than us. Swell guy he is. We can only be gone for 4 days due to work, so it has to be somewhere within reasonable distance. It can't be to Hawaii, except for him, since he's in California and in reasonable flight distance. It's gotta be somewhere close to the East Coast, so we don't waste two combined days in the air flying to get there. We got a couple places in mind, but nothing officially booked yet.

Pretty exciting to know you're going somewhere pretty soon, but not sure exactly where! And I have some money put away for maybe another trip in the Spring! To Oahu or somewhere that I can take my time and not have to worry about long flights!

Hope everybody else stays warm, has a great new year and gets some surf soon!

-4*F outside this New Years morning. Water temps around 43*F, I believe. Even if there were waves, at this air temp, i would defer. I am now drawing my lower limits around 28*F from now on, and with no winds. I got all the way to age 66 before needing to do this - good enough for me. Surfing is great, but not if you need to suffer to do so.
And besides, I have other interests that need attending to as well.
But no matter what interests we feel obliged to do, doing so at -4*F just plainly sucks.
Maybe I can pick up a nice place in PR now, for not a lot of money and spend our winters there. I know my daughter and grand-daughter would love it, so would my son-in-law. My wife, not so much--she is a snow bunny, what with being from Quebec city and all.......
Anyway, guys and Betty--Happy New Year, wishing you all the best of swells for this year. And the best health to you all!

I hear that! Once I got an couple years into my 40’s, I found that I couldn’t take the cold the way I used to. Probably needed the larger suites in water temps just a bit higher than I had to used to. Used to be in trunks by 65 degrees (air temps pending) it’s like 68 degrees for me at this point!

I wouldn’t touch surfing in -4, though I might think about it if it’s beeb a while. A place in PR sounds pretty suite, too! Happy new year to you and everyone else! I think it’s gonna be a great one! Hoping for the same for everyone else!

I agree with you guys and totally understand, no need to justify... after you have surfed many waves over many years missing a few here and there due to extreme temps isint a big deal... plus the age thing is totally understandable. Barry- if your still putting on a 5mil at 66yrs, I would say that's quite a feat in itself! A lot of guys past 50 don't surf winters...

I find more then anything that it's just hard to get motivated when the temp is below 32...

And eatswell- great to hear. Keep us posted! I would suggest PR, perfect east coast winter spot, but after the hurricane idk... Central America is always good- but not the best time for waves there

    Anyways- happy news years guys!
