I'm curious from anybody who's surfed the mid-atlantic/northeast in the past couple weeks, what did you wear thickness wise for suite and gloves?
Last time in I wore a 5/4 hoods, boots and gloves. Water was 44*F. Now it is 41*F here in NH. That translates to 6/4 until April. Having said that , I have not been in the water in 3 weeks. Tomorrow I may go surfing.
Had a VERY brief session (like 20 min) in moco on Tuesday, wore a hooded 5/4 with 7mil boots and gloves (my warmest setup) for the first time this year, was very comfortable but I'm pretty sure I would've been fine in 4/3 (air temp was probably 40). Would def want the 5mil if the air was cold now though.
I'm going out Sunday in DE and i'll be enjoying my 3/4, 5 mill boots, 5 mill gloves and hood. But I also can handle the cold really well.
No I did it all last year because my thicker suit had seen its end. He meant 4/3 btw not 3/2 which is what your thinking. I’m going out in 5/4, 7mm boots, 5mm gloves now.
Using a R3 (Patagonia) or 5.5/4 (Rip Curl), depending; with 5 mm boots and 3mm gloves. Saving the 7mm boots and 5mm gloves for when the water gets really cold. Yes this is not the coldest water of the year which is early March.
water by me is reading 35. that's about as cold as it gets here in dirty jerz. I keep getting pissed that it's still dropping the last couple days. I was hoping it'd at least get back above 40. These are usually feb temps.
Average ocean temperature in °F Cape May, Atlantic City, Sandy Hook December 42 44 43 January 37 37 37 February 37 35 36 March 42 42 40 Annual 55 54 53
never used over a 5/4 mm though 7 mm boots and 5mm gloves a must. I like da lobsta claws, mitts are warmer but cant grab my board that well
This. ^^^^^^ Couple other tips. 1. If your feet and hands stay warm the rest of you will stay much warmer. Good boots and gloves really make a big difference. 2. A little Vaseline on your face helps a lot. 3. I use 7mm boots even with my 4/3 because having warm feet lets me use a 4/3 when others are still in their 5/4s.
My bad, I meant 4/3. Sometimes I can stay out for and hour or two sometimes longer depending on wind temp.
Water warming up in last 12 hours in nj per the buoye 40 last night 44 last reading. Bust out them bananee hamiees
I plan to break my streak of not surfing this weekend. Havent surfed since turkey holiday. Will be wearing 5/4, 7mm gloves, 5 mm boots. Hope to get an hour and a half. I plan to surf poorly!
i am wearing a 5/4 with 7mm boots and mittens in the 34ish water and plan to stay out for around 2 hours, once u get numb you are pretty much used to it. Pumped for this weekends swell
Just pulled out the 5 mm boots and gloves to compliment the 4/3. Looks like a small window in the morning...I'm on it though.
