I had the original one and now have the $150 dollar one. When you get it to work right it was cool but half of my videos are of my stupid face as I try to figure out if the friggin thing is on or not :D. I have the wrist mount but the deck mount option looks a little more manageable. The wrist mount feels weird and is distractiing to surf with IMO. Hope this helps.

Flip HD Ultra records and streams 720p and you can buy a housing for it for like 50 bucks. The camera itself costs about 180 USD

yea true but I just saw surflines article on this cam and it says that the old one uses three- four batteries for only two hours for the camera to be on. So I think the new one would save money if you use it enough because it comes with a rechargable battery.

true it really depends if u are will to drop the extra $$ do it and u are gonna get a better camera so really its on how much u got. Personally i would buy the surf HD and then buy the helmet accessories so i dont just use it for surf

    Surf Camera

A way better method of taking a camera out surfing with you is the Surf Camera. It will never be in your way.
GE just came out with a new waterproof camera. You can by them together as a Surf Camera Combo.

buy a set of rechargeable batterries for $20 for the old style - or even better buy two sets then you have a spare set ready to go.

The go pro is very heavy and bulky and the battery life will only last you 20 minutes with video if you are lucky. The digital waterproof cameras like Pentax, Olympus, Fuji will last at least two full hours. GE has a new waterproof camera that will last 3 to 4 hours out in the surf.
Using these cameras in the Surf Camera case makes it very easy to surf with.

make sure you check all the specs on the "waterproof" cameras - some of the cheaper ones are only rated to 10' depth (like Fuji Z33WP)

Don't know about you but I wouldn't trust such a lightweight in heavy surf - fine for the pool but not if there's a chance you'll take a beating

The 10' rating is over a long period of time. Going down in short squirts twice that rating has no effect on the Fuji z33wp.
The picture quality of the z33wp isn't all the great but it still way better than the go_pro and unlike the go_pro you can use it on land. It has smile and face detection qualities and much more. The battery life with the z33wp will also last much longer than a surf session.
You can check out the surfers review on the z33wp here.

I'd love to see footage from one of these used during some nasty east coast winter swells

Here some surfer shots using the z33wp. I've got way more photos using this camera but I don't have them organized like I do in this link.
As you can see the quality of it isn't all that great.
I'm using the GE G3wp right now and I'm pretty impressed with it. G3wp surfer shots.
btw - I am in no way a professional photographer. Anyone can do this with their waterproof camera using the Surf Camera case.
