Not saying your wrong.... But man, vinyl is awesome. The thing is newer music isn't recorded for vinyl. It doesn't sound right on vinyl. Hipsters will listen to newer music on vinyl just to be cool. Now older music however, was recorded with vinyl in mind. As that was all there was. I love listening to old vinyl. I got my dad's old collection from the 60s and 70s. Original doors, Beatles, allman bros.... the list goes on and on. Music back then was different. You didn't skip through songs, you put a record on, smoke a joint, check out the sleeve the record came in, and enjoy the trip. Long story short. Newer music on vinyl is dumb. Don't sound right. Older music still sounds better digitally, but it still sounds right on vinyl. Its an experience in itself, and I'm not talking about the sound/music.
^^^yea. I remember pouring over the album cover art and reading the lyrics (if they had them) for hours. Times... and music... sure have changed. Don't get me wrong... I dig new music, and the new sound digital music has. But I dig old music, too... in all of it's rawness and simplicity. I took a psych course in college and asked the prof... "how is it that I can enjoy classical music played by a 100 piece orchestra just as much as a three chord punk tune played by a three piece band?" He had no answer, but said, "if you ever figure that out, let me know."
I still have my Dual turntable I bought when I got married--1973. Still works. And I still have all my albums--best one is a London Howling Wolf Sessions with: Chester Burnet, Eric Clapton, Bill Wyman, Charlie Watts, and Stevie Winwood. Recorded on Chess Records--I bought it in 1970; best blues album ever recorded, in my humble opinion. And I am no hipster, just a former hippie that used to write the Music Critic column for college newspaper. Next to CDs....vinyl sucks, boys......sorry, but SUCKS capitalized.
London howling wolf sessions.... as in howling wolf the blues guy? Or is that just a coincidence? Howling wolf is my favorite blues artist. Getting a bit of topic in this thread but howling wolf is worth it. But yeah. Cds or digital sounds better. But you brought it up...old blues guys, such as howling wolf, just sounds right on vinyl. The rawness of vinyl just blends and mixes well with the rawness of that style music and the rawness in which it was recorded. The way things get recorded fascinates me. Old or new. After spending time in a studio recording bass... Its something i got really into. The way bands got some of those effects, such as Pink Floyd, is unreal. Compared to pressing a button now
Bass, Yes, Chester Burnett is Howling Wolf, google the London Sessions Howling Wolf on Chess Records a now gone record company from Chicago.
Not bagging on vinyl, but I can see how my blunt manner could be misconstrued. Lots of audiophiles echo your sentiments and make up a portion of consumers who have taken part in the Vinyl Renaissance. I've got dozens and dozens of records and still listen to them on a modern turntable. Your statements are spot on.
We just changed the price for the Fall 2017 mag to $5 if you guys still want it. We are close to selling out, and we are gearing up for the next magazine: Winter 2018. We are trying to make the next one cheaper, but we need advertisers first. If anyone would be interested in buying a mag or advertising with us please visit our website: urnsurfco.com
Will you have any articles of surfing on the Schuylkill river by the boathouses in Philly? Big waves there, huh?? Looking forward to that!! Maybe you can get a couple of mummies out of the UPENN Museum to go river surfing with you!!
Wellll there actually is a point break in Camden... they should totally do a travel issue on that one... that's Camden NJ...
Good job 5$ is a bit more reasonable. You should check in with Ho Stevie, maybe he would advertise. He has a quality line of surf gear going- from Cali and is a cool guy
If you view the section of the mag on the crew running it, most are from Pennsylvania, that wonderful surf destination we are all panting to go to........
Barry still a kook. I hate seeing PA tags at my beach more than the next guy, but check their content. These guys clearly put in their time and get some good waves. I applaud the effort but am also skeptical about the printed mag. Hope it works for them. The website is simple and well designed. I recognize a couple of these dudes from water time in AC, they surf well and are respectful. Many people could probably learn something from them. That said, don’t come to my beach! Hahaha...
