Does anyone else get tired of following the social media accounts for most of the east coast surfing talent? These guys have the commitment and are great athletes, but their social media accounts get old really fast. We get it, you're unemployed, drink coffee every morning, and love self promotion. Maybe I am just being pessimistic, but if you're going to live a "self indulgent" lifestyle I think it should be done quietly and not updated every hour on instagram.

Ditch social media. The purge has begun.

If you “follow” anybody in real life or on the interwebs, then you are a groupie follower, no exceptions. Followers follow, leaders lead.

Live your own life and let them live theirs. No need to live vicariously through other people when you are stoked on your own life and how you live it.

Drop all Social Media such as Facial Book, Twatter, Instagay, and any other site except for this one. SI still seems different to me. When it goes the way of those listed above, I’m out.

    You actually "follow" them??
    If so, get a life.

Wouldn't say I'm tired of the content they post, more that I thought seeing more pictures of really good surfers on the same waves I'm surfing would enhance my life, and the opposite has kind of happened. Never been huge into social media, used facebook a decent amount for a couple years but effectively quit that a few years ago (didn't delete account, just stopped checking) when I realized it was adding no value to my life and wasting my time. But at the time I kept using instagram because, basically, I like seeing cool pictures of the shit my friends are doing and it didn't seem to have the same capacity to piss me off as facebook (where I got really fucking tired of hearing everyone's opinion on everything going on in the world).

Started following a bunch of local pros on instagram last summer/fall during the crazy run of hurricane swell, because I was peaking hard on stoke and so I wanted to be consuming even more stoke through any means possible during the hours I wasn't surfing, plus it was cool to see what really good surfers could do on the same waves I was on, plus it was useful for showing my friends what they missed out on when they bailed on a session for some bullshit reason. But I've been recently realizing it's basically had the complete opposite effect and made me less stoked on the whole... lots more days/sessions where I feel like I missed out, not only on days where I miss a brief period of good waves locally due to work or other commitments, but a lot of times on days when the local breaks never even get the right wind/swell/tide combination to work.

But sure enough, all the NJ/NY pros with nothing to do but drive around all day looking for surf (not in any way putting them down, that's fucking awesome that they figured out a way to live like that) managed to score clean overhead barrels (or maybe just one or two overhead barrels that looked clean from the right angle and were better than the rest of the sets coming through, who really knows), and while there was no logistical way I could've surfed there on that day, it's close enough to home to make me feel like I really fucking blew it. Not to mention I now waste way way too much of my time and focus endlessly refreshing my instagram feed in hopes (apparently) of seeing the latest new picture that, 99% of the time, adds no value to my life and gives me no usable information but makes me feel worse about my surfing ability and quantity and life in general. It's pretty fucked up how that works.

You follow others on social media but then complain about the people you follow on social media for actually posting on social media?

If you hate it when you hit your thumb with a hammer, stop hitting your thumb with a hammer.

Btw guys, if any of you have the Facebook app on your Android phone, they have access to ALL of your phone data, they basically are able to access your phone remotely. How’s that make you feel? Good? Got anything on that little device that you don’t want strangers seeing? For god sakes, delete your FB accounts, they sold out everyone of their users for billions.

I like Instagram... I like good pics there are plenty of them there.
Complaining about peoples pics that you choose to look at is kinda weird.

People are so dense now a days. Zucky has clearly lied straight faced to everyone for two decades and they still give themselves to this spell bound AI ritual. I do think a good amount of people are starting to understand how messed up Social Media is and finally companies are beginning to remove their Facebook accounts.

"Following" other surfers on any social media is the height of gayness, bar none.
Maybe it is legal "stalking" as well.
But it definitely has a sexual basis to it.
    No excuses. No exceptions

All due respect Barry Cuda surfing magazines are a novelty nowadays and there are no more dvd/vhs surfing movies to buy. Most of the surfing content out there is only offered through social media.

I didn't even know who Ben Gravy was until a few months ago, and only because others on this board talk about him. Still never bothered to look at his content.

Just my .02 cents but I've always found modern social media accounts to be egotistical and self-aggrandizing. I really don't care what Gravy, Ho Stevie, the Coffin Brothers or Kim Kardashian are doing. Talk about "stoke" or "talent" or whatever you want to brand it, I just find it all extremely pretentious, self-serving and above all, FAKE.

Don't have FB, IG or any other modern social media for that matter. I have enough going on in my own life and focus on the happiness and well-being of my somewhat smaller circle of family and friends.

And honestly, it keeps me out of trouble.

How many of you guys can say they've never looked up an old flame, or have never been contacted by one? Or tried to randomly hook up for that matter? I see it again and again. I

"Lead me not to temptation. I can find it myself." Or something like that.

One last thing to chew on: FB is the least of your privacy problems. Google and Amazon's algorithms are taking you straight to Oceania. If you believe that they (and others) haven't been mining your personal data, then you're probably one of those that actually may have changed your vote to Trump after the Great Russian Data Deluge lol.

I removed Google from my phone a while back. They must be stopped or at the very least reeled in a bit. These tech companies have gotten too powerful, have too much control over the business world , and they have too much insight into people’s lives.

That being true, then, it is due to the fact that there is no market for the products. There is a reason printed surf journals failed; there is a reason video stores failed. Example Blockbuster video, etc.
Never forget, surfers, in addition to being morons, are really, really CHEAP. Not frugal, but CHEAP!!!
The world of business entertainment has changed, and it will never go back, other than being a mere curiosity.

How many times have you looked up something on Google, only to open up several other pages of unrelated content while being constantly bombarded by ads for the item(s) you searched on Google?

    *Every* time, that's how often.

I really feel sorry for people that have fallen into the "Alexis", "Siri" and "Cortana" programs.

Not only are the algorithms more powerful, but are assisting the ushering of Artificial Intelligence into our lives and increasing its knowledge and power based exponentially.

While AI no doubt has its benefits, it has the capability of getting uncontrollably out of hand because humans have proven to be incapable of conceiving every possible contingency.

Facebook is child's play compared to AI.
